What is lead qualification?
Updated · By Robert Breen
Lead qualification is deciding how good a new lead is: whether they fit what you sell, how soon they want to buy, and what should happen next. Qualified leads get a fast, personal follow-up, and the rest get something useful without taking up a salesperson's time.
Why it matters for a small business
A small sales team can't give every inquiry the same attention, and it shouldn't try. A 12-person company that wants to switch this month needs a call this week. A student doing research needs a helpful link. When every lead gets the same canned reply, or waits in an inbox until Monday, the hot ones go cold.
AI helps because the rules for qualifying are usually simple enough to write in a sentence, but tedious to apply by hand, one form at a time. An AI agent can read each request the moment it arrives, rate it, log it and send the next step that fits. The quality of the rating depends entirely on how concrete your rules are.
In a real lesson: Build an AI Demo Request Form That Qualifies Leads
In the AI Demo Request Form lesson, you build a "Book a demo" form in Lovable for Northwind Scheduling Software, a made-up company that sells scheduling software to small service businesses. It has four required fields: Name, Email, What do you need help with? and Team size, sent to an n8n webhook as name, email, need and teamSize.
The qualifying happens in the AI Agent's System Message: "Rate each lead Hot, Warm, or Nurture. Hot: 5 or more staff and wants to switch within a month. Warm: a clear need but no timeline. Nurture: just looking." The same message ties each rating to one action. Hot gets two demo times this week, Warm gets a link to book a demo, and Nurture gets a helpful guide, no pressure.
When you submit the test request, the agent sees a team of twelve that wants to switch this month, rates it Hot, saves a row to the Leads sheet with the Google Sheets Tool and emails two demo times through the Gmail Tool.

Common confusions
Lead qualification vs lead scoring
Scoring gives each lead a number from many signals, often inside a CRM. Qualification is the decision you make from it: talk now, nurture, or pass. Small teams can skip the number and write three clear buckets, as the lesson does.
Qualifying vs classifying
Rating a lead is a kind of text classification: the AI picks one label from a fixed list. What makes it qualification is that each label triggers a different next step.
Tips
- Use facts the form actually collects (team size, timeline) in your rules. The AI can't rate on information it never sees.
- Make Nurture a real offer, like a guide, not a dead end.
- Read the first few weeks of ratings in the sheet and tighten the rules where the AI was too generous or too strict.

Frequently asked questions
- What questions should a demo form ask to qualify leads?
- Only what your rules need. The lesson uses four: name, email, the need, and team size. Every extra field costs submissions.
- Should AI decide which leads I ignore?
- No lead should be ignored. Let the AI choose the next step and the speed, and review the ratings so a mislabeled hot lead doesn't get a slow reply.
