Why does AI get totals wrong?

Quick answer

AI math errors are wrong totals or calculations from a language model that otherwise reads your data correctly. A model predicts likely text rather than running a calculator, so it can pick the right rows and still add them up wrongly.

Why it matters for a small business

A language model writes answers word by word. Finding which rows say Active and belong to one account manager is something it does well. Adding three numbers is also something it often does well, but not always, and it can be wrong while sounding certain. The risk isn't that AI can't do arithmetic at all. It is that you can't tell when it slips.

The habit that protects you is small: whenever an answer contains a number you will repeat to a client, a boss or a bank, recompute it yourself or with a spreadsheet formula. If the number matters every time, put the calculation in a sheet and let the AI explain it rather than produce it.

This matters most in finance, accounting and operations work, where one wrong total can end up in an invoice, a report or a client call. A short checking step costs seconds, and a wrong number repeated to a client can cost much more.

In the lesson, you ask the agent for the total monthly retainer for Maya Chen's Active clients. The lesson tells you to add the numbers yourself: 2,500 plus 1,800 plus 1,900 is 6,200.

In the lesson's own first test the agent answered 5,200. It found the right rows and added them wrong. Your run may be right or wrong, because models vary, and that is the point of checking.

Common confusions

Math error vs hallucination

A hallucination invents a fact. A math error starts from real data and miscalculates it. Both are fixed by checking against the source.

Wrong once vs always wrong

One slip doesn't mean the tool is useless. It means totals need a quick human check.

Tips

  • Ask the agent to list the rows it used, then add them yourself.
  • Use a SUM formula for numbers that will be reused.
  • Round numbers are easy to check: do it before you send anything out.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop using AI for numbers?
No. Use it to find and explain, then check the sums. The lesson says models are good at finding rows and weaker at sums.
Do all AI tools make math errors?
Models vary from run to run, so any answer can differ. Check totals whichever tool you use.
What is the quickest check?
Add the few numbers by hand or in a spreadsheet cell before you repeat the total to anyone.
