What is the Wait node in n8n?
Quick answer
The Wait node pauses an n8n workflow partway through and resumes it later. It can resume after a time interval, at a specified date and time, when a webhook address is called, or when someone submits a form. The run is saved while it waits, so a pause of days does not keep anything running.

Why it matters for a small business
Some steps should not happen at once. A follow-up email works better two days after the first; an approval needs a person to answer before anything is sent; an app may need a few seconds between calls. The Wait node lets one workflow cover the whole process, including the pause, instead of splitting it into several.
Waiting on a webhook or form is the quiet power of this node. A workflow can draft an invoice reminder, send the manager a link, and pause until the manager clicks Approve. That is a simple, reliable form of human in the loop without a separate tool.
Where you'll use it: add Wait from the node panel and pick a Resume option: After Time Interval, At Specified Time, On Webhook Call or On Form Submitted. For webhook and form options, n8n gives you a resume address to send to the person or app. The Executions list shows the run as waiting.
In a real lesson: Guardian: Make Your n8n AI Agent Ask Before It Emails a Customer
In the free Guardian approval gate lesson, Maya Chen of Harbor Line Bookkeeping (made up) writes a policy: emails to the team go out alone, while emails to a client wait for a person. The lesson uses Guardian's own node and Approval Inbox to hold those client emails.
n8n's built-in Wait node is the plain version of that idea. Set it to On Webhook Call, email Maya the resume link with the draft, and the workflow only sends the reminder once she clicks it.

Common confusions
Wait node vs Schedule Trigger
A Schedule Trigger starts a workflow at set times. A Wait node pauses one that is already running.
n8n Wait vs Delay by Zapier
Delay by Zapier pauses for a time or until a date. n8n's Wait can also resume on a webhook or form, which suits approvals.
Tips
- After a long wait, check that the record is still relevant before acting.
- Short waits of a few seconds help stay under an app's rate limit.
- Give approval links to people only through a channel you trust.

Frequently asked questions
- Does a waiting workflow use resources?
- For longer waits n8n saves the run and resumes it later, so nothing keeps running in the meantime.
- Can the Wait node time out?
- Yes. For webhook and form resumes you can set a limit, so the run continues or stops if no one responds in time.
