What is Delay by Zapier?

Quick answer

Delay by Zapier is a built-in step that pauses a Zap before the next step runs. Delay For waits a set time, such as two days. Delay Until waits until a date and time. Delay After Queue spaces runs out one after another. Zapier's help center says Delay steps do not count as tasks, though Delay needs a paid plan.

Why it matters for a small business

Good timing is often the difference between helpful and pushy. A thank-you can go out at once, while a "just checking in" note works better two days later. Delay lets one Zap handle both, so you do not need a second Zap or a reminder in someone's calendar.

Delay After Queue helps with apps that dislike bursts. If 50 records arrive at once, spacing the calls out can keep you under an app's rate limit. Keep in mind that anything can change during a long delay, so a later step may need to check the record is still relevant before acting.

Where you'll use it: in the Zap editor, add a step and choose Delay, then pick Delay For, Delay Until or Delay After Queue and set the time. While a run is paused, Zap history shows it as waiting until the delay ends.

In a real lesson: Never Miss a New Client Inquiry using Zapier

In the free Your First Zap lesson, the finish suggests a next step: send each new inquiry a quick reply so prospects hear from Northgate Accounting first. That first reply should go at once, with no delay.

A follow-up is where Delay fits. After the sheet row and the instant reply, a Delay For step of two days, then an email that asks whether they still need help, would follow up on every inquiry without anyone setting a reminder.

Common confusions

Delay vs schedule

A schedule starts a Zap at set times. A delay pauses a Zap that is already running.

Delay by Zapier vs n8n Wait node

They do the same job. The n8n Wait node can also wait for a webhook call or a form submission.

Tips

  • Add a check after a long delay, such as "has the client already replied?", before sending.
  • Use Delay After Queue for bursts that might hit a rate limit.
  • Keep delays shorter than a month; Zapier caps how long a run can wait.
