What is an execution in n8n?
Quick answer
An execution in n8n is one run of a workflow from its first node to its last. Clicking Execute workflow in the editor starts a test run. Once a workflow is published, each real trigger, such as a form submission, starts a run of its own.

Why it matters for a small business
Executions are how you answer "did it actually run?" A workflow that is built but never run has done nothing, and one that ran can still have done the wrong thing. Thinking in executions keeps you from confusing the two.
Each run shows every node it passed through, the items that went in and came out, and any error. That record is what you use to find out where a broken workflow went wrong, so it is worth learning to read.
In a real lesson: n8n: Execute Step, Execute Workflow and Publish
The n8n: Execute step, Execute workflow and Publish lesson walks through the difference. For Maple Street Bookkeeping, a made-up office, you click Execute step to run one node, then Execute workflow to run the whole chain: a Webhook, Edit Fields and Append row in sheet.
Every node shows a green check and 1 item. The lesson is blunt about what that means: green checks say each node ran, not that the result is right, so you open the New clients sheet and look for Dana's email and name. Then you click Publish, and real form submissions start their own runs.

Common confusions
Execution vs workflow
A workflow is the design. An execution is one time it ran. One workflow can have thousands of executions.
Test run vs live run
Execute workflow in the editor is a test. A published workflow runs on its own when its trigger fires, using the Production URL rather than the Test URL.
Tips
- After a test run, check the real result, such as the sheet row or the sent draft, not just the green checks.
- Pin sample data on the trigger so you can re-run without sending a new form each time.
- Publish again after any change, because the live workflow is still the old version until you do.

Frequently asked questions
- What is an execution in n8n?
- One run of a workflow. Each execution records which nodes ran, what data went through them and whether anything failed.
- Why does my n8n workflow show green checks but the wrong result?
- A green check only means the node ran without an error. Open the output and check the data, and check the destination, such as the row in your sheet.
- How do I run an n8n workflow automatically?
- Add a trigger, such as a form webhook or a schedule, and publish the workflow. Publishing is what turns on automatic runs.
