What is deep research in AI assistants?

Quick answer

Deep research is a mode in several AI assistants, including ChatGPT and Gemini, where the AI spends several minutes searching the web or connected files, reading many sources and writing a longer report with citations. You give it a question, and it plans and runs the searches itself.

Why it matters for a small business

A normal chat answer is quick and drawn from a few sources or none. Deep research is closer to asking a junior analyst for a first-pass brief: compare three software vendors, summarize recent rule changes in your industry, list what competitors say on their pricing pages. It saves hours of tab-hopping and gives you a starting document with links.

It is still a first draft. The assistant can pick weak sources, miss the one that matters, misread a page or present an old figure as current. Because the report looks thorough, it is tempting to trust it whole. Treat every key fact as unverified until you open the cited source, and do not use it alone for legal, tax or financial decisions.

In a real lesson: Prompt Writing 101: Role, Context, Task, Format

Stepthrough has no deep research lesson yet, but Prompt Writing 101 teaches the part that most decides how good a research report will be: the brief. The lesson starts with "Write an email to my customers about our new service." and gets back a generic email full of placeholders like [Service Name] and [Benefit 1].

Then it rebuilds the request in four parts for Summit Lawn Care, a made-up lawn company in Harrisburg, PA. Role: the owner. Context: existing weekly mowing customers, a new aeration and overseeding service at $149 for most yards, September 29 to October 17. Task: a short announcement with one call to action. Format: under 120 words, no emoji, subject line first. The answer becomes specific because the request is.

A deep research request works the same way, only bigger. Say who the report is for, what you already know, the exact question, which sources count and which to skip, and the format you want, such as a comparison table with a link for every row. A vague research question gets a long, vague report.

Common confusions

Deep research vs AI search

AI search gives a quick answer from a handful of sources. Deep research runs many searches over minutes and writes a structured report. Use quick search for simple facts.

Deep research vs your own research

The report is a starting point you check. It does not replace reading the key sources yourself, especially for anything you will send to a client or act on.

Tips

  • Use Role, Context, Task, Format to write the request, and name the sources you trust.
  • Ask for a link next to every important claim, then open the ones your decision depends on.
  • Keep client names and confidential details out unless your company has approved the tool.

Frequently asked questions

How long does deep research take?
Usually several minutes, sometimes longer for broad questions. Most assistants let you keep working and come back when the report is ready. Check your plan's limits, since these modes often have usage caps.
Can deep research read my company files?
Some assistants can search connected sources such as files or email when you link them. Check what your plan supports and what your company allows before connecting work accounts.
