What is ChatGPT memory?
Updated · By Robert Breen
ChatGPT memory is a feature that lets ChatGPT carry useful details from past conversations into new ones, such as your business name or how you like answers formatted. You can see what it has saved, delete items, or turn memory off in settings.
Why it matters for a small business
Memory cuts repetition. If ChatGPT already knows you run a lawn care company in Harrisburg and prefer short, plain answers, a one-line request gets a more relevant reply without the setup paragraph.
It is also easy to over-trust. ChatGPT decides what seems worth keeping, may summarize it loosely, and may carry an old detail into a new task. That is fine for preferences and background. It is risky for anything exact: this season's price, this week's dates, one client's terms. Those still belong in the prompt or in a file you control. And because memory is information saved by an outside service, think about what you let it store, especially about clients.
In a real lesson: Prompt Writing 101: Role, Context, Task, Format
Stepthrough has no lesson on ChatGPT's memory setting. Prompt Writing 101 shows the kind of information memory tries to supply, and why it shouldn't supply all of it. The Context part of the prompt for Summit Lawn Care, the made-up lawn company in the lesson, says its customers are Harrisburg homeowners who already get weekly mowing, and that the new service is core aeration and overseeding, $149 for most yards, between September 29 and October 17.
Some of that is stable background that memory could reasonably hold: the business, the city, who the customers are. The price and the dates are not. They change every season, and a remembered $149 from last fall showing up in this fall's announcement is a real mistake with a real customer cost.
The lesson's answer is a saved template in a Prompt Templates Google Doc, with [BUSINESS], [SERVICE] and [DETAILS] as blanks you fill in each time. Let memory handle the background if you like, and type the facts that change yourself.

Common confusions
ChatGPT memory vs custom instructions
Custom instructions are what you deliberately write about yourself and how you want answers. Memory is what ChatGPT saves as you chat, or when you ask it to remember something. Both can apply across chats.
ChatGPT memory vs the context window
The context window is what the model can see in the current conversation. Memory is a separate set of saved notes brought into new conversations.
ChatGPT memory vs agent memory
In n8n, agent memory such as Simple Memory holds the recent messages of one conversation so the agent can follow along. It isn't a long-term profile of you.
Tips
- Review saved memories now and then, and delete anything outdated or sensitive.
- Say "remember that..." to save a fact on purpose, or "forget..." to remove one.
- Use a Temporary Chat when a conversation shouldn't affect memory at all.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I turn ChatGPT memory off?
- Yes. Memory can be switched off in settings, and individual saved memories can be viewed and deleted. On work accounts, an admin may control it.
- Is ChatGPT memory the same as chat history?
- No. Chat history is the list of past conversations you can reopen. Memory is a set of saved details that can shape new conversations.
