What does append row mean in Google Sheets automation?
Updated · By Robert Breen
Append row is the spreadsheet operation that adds a new row of data below the last filled row of a sheet, leaving existing rows untouched. In n8n's Google Sheets node it is the usual way to log each new lead, receipt or idea.
Why it matters for a small business
Most business logging is add-only: every new form submission, expense or follow-up becomes one more line. Appending keeps the history intact, so you can sort, filter and total it later, and it never overwrites what a person typed in an earlier row.
It is also the setting people forget. The Sheets tool in an AI agent opens on a read operation, and if you leave it there, the agent can look at the sheet but can't add anything to it. Picking the wrong write operation can be worse: an update can change rows you meant to keep.

In the AI Social Media Idea Agent lesson, BrightPath Marketing's sheet, Social Media Ideas, has five headers: Platform, Post Topic, Hook, Description and Call to Action. After connecting Google, you open Operation on the Google Sheets Tool and choose Append Row. The voice-over explains why: by default the node reads rows, and you want to add them.
You pick the document and Sheet1, click ✦ next to each column under Values to Send, and test in the chat. When you send "Yes, save those ideas to the sheet", the agent calls the tool for each idea, and three new rows (LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook ideas) appear under the headers.
The AI Receipt Extractor makes the same switch, from Get row(s) to Append Row, and you can watch the node on the canvas rename itself to match.

Common confusions
Append Row vs Update Row
Append always adds a new line. Update changes an existing row, found by matching a column. Use append for logs, and update when one record should change in place, like a lead's status.
Append Row vs Append or Update Row
n8n also offers Append or Update Row, which updates the row when a matching value (say, an email address) already exists and appends otherwise. It helps avoid duplicate rows when the same person submits twice.
Tips
- Put headers in row 1 before connecting the node; appended values line up with those names.
- Expect duplicates if a workflow runs twice on the same input, and decide whether that matters.
- Open the sheet after a test instead of trusting the green node.

Frequently asked questions
- Where does n8n put an appended row?
- Below the last row that has data in the selected tab, under your headers.
- Why did my agent read the sheet instead of writing to it?
- The Google Sheets Tool opens on a read operation, Get row(s). Change Operation to Append Row so the agent can add data.
- Can Append Row add several rows at once?
- Yes. In a regular workflow it adds one row per item it receives. An agent calls the tool once per record, which is how three ideas become three rows.
