ChatGPT vs Claude for bookkeeping: four jobs compared
Quick answer
For bookkeeping, either assistant can do the core jobs: read an uploaded CSV, match a bank statement to a ledger, sort an aging report and draft client emails. The honest difference is what Stepthrough has tested. ChatGPT has free, step-by-step lessons for three number jobs: month-end bank reconciliation, chasing overdue invoices and reviewing a client's P&L export. Claude has a lesson for the job that saves the most retyping: a project that holds your firm's fee schedule, engagement terms and tone. Both offer projects, and both can analyze uploaded CSV files. If your firm already pays for one on a business plan, use that one and learn the habits below.

This page is for bookkeepers, staff accountants and small-firm owners. It is general information, not accounting or tax advice, and we have not run a head-to-head accuracy test, so we do not call one more accurate. Start with Month-End Bank Reconciliation with ChatGPT or A Claude Project for Your Firm. Plan details below are as of October 2026.
How do they compare at a glance?
| Bookkeeping job | ChatGPT | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Month-end bank reconciliation | Free lesson: upload the bank statement and the books, match every row, list exceptions with reasons, then add the numbers up yourself. | Anthropic says you can upload CSV files for data analysis, with code execution on every plan. No Stepthrough lesson yet. |
| Overdue invoices | Free lesson: upload the aging report, get a chase list (oldest and biggest first, the disputed invoice held back), then a friendly, firm or final reminder per client. | Same CSV analysis applies. No Stepthrough lesson yet. |
| Review a client's P&L export | Free lesson: ChatGPT checks the file first, flags duplicate bank-feed entries and uncategorized rows, then builds a monthly summary and a chart. | Same CSV analysis applies. No Stepthrough lesson yet. |
| One home per client or for the firm | ChatGPT Projects, on the Free plan too: instructions, files under Sources, project-only memory. Free lesson. | Claude Projects, on every plan (up to five on Free): instructions and project knowledge. Free lesson for an accounting firm. |
| Price | Varies by plan; see OpenAI's pricing page. | Free $0. Pro $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month billed annually. Team Standard $25 per seat a month billed monthly, or $20 billed annually. |
Which is better for bookkeeping, ChatGPT or Claude?
Neither wins on every job, and we have not tested them side by side. Both are general AI assistants that read files you upload and write the email. Your prompt, your files and your checks matter more than the logo. What differs is where you can practice: ChatGPT has three tested number lessons, and Claude has a tested project lesson for a made-up accounting firm, Millbrook Accounting.
If you already pay for one, stay with it. If you are choosing, run the same month through both: same files, same prompt, then compare each answer to your own work. The broader picture for office work is in ChatGPT vs Claude, and the bank reconciliation detail is in ChatGPT vs Claude for bank reconciliation.
Can AI chase overdue invoices for a bookkeeper?
It can do the sorting and the first drafts, which are the parts that get put off. In Collect Overdue Invoices Faster using ChatGPT, a made-up studio has ten past-due invoices. You upload the aging report, ChatGPT ranks this week's chase list with the oldest and biggest first and holds the disputed invoice back, you check a row and the totals against the file, and it drafts a friendly, firm or final reminder for each client.
What it does not replace: your call on each client, a phone call when an invoice is 90 days old, and settling a dispute first. Claude can read the same CSV, but we have not built that lesson in Claude, so we make no claim about its results.
Can ChatGPT or Claude review a client's P&L?
Yes, as long as it checks the file before it adds anything up. In Analyze a Client's P&L Export, ChatGPT reads a restaurant client's Profit and Loss Detail export and finds four transactions listed twice and nine rows with no account. You decide how to handle them, then get a monthly summary, each cost as a share of sales, a chart and three takeaways with the numbers behind them.
The accounting calls stay with you. Tie the totals back to the P&L in your accounting software before a client meeting. The same habit applies in Claude.
Should a bookkeeper use ChatGPT Projects or Claude Projects?
Whichever assistant your firm uses. Both keep instructions and files in one place so you stop re-explaining. In Claude, A Claude Project for Your Firm loads a fee schedule and engagement letter terms as project knowledge, and a chat inside the project quotes the right fees and offers a call instead of giving tax advice by email. Anthropic says projects are on every plan, Free users can create up to five, and Team and Enterprise can share a project with the organization.
In ChatGPT, ChatGPT Projects: Your Brand Voice in One Place sets up instructions, files under Sources and project-only memory. The lesson lists the file limit per project as 5 on Free, 25 on Plus and Go, and 40 on Pro and business plans. Either way, put firm documents like fee schedules in the project, not tax returns or IDs.
Is it safe to upload client books to ChatGPT or Claude?
Only on an account your firm has approved, and only after you remove what the job does not need, such as bank account numbers, card numbers and tax IDs. The lessons recommend a business plan that does not train on your data for client books, and following your firm's policy. Check the terms of your exact plan.
The free ChatGPT data controls lesson walks through the settings to check, and Safe AI at Work covers what never goes into a chat. This is practical guidance, not legal advice.
