Claude Free vs Pro vs Max: Which Plan Do You Need (2026)
Quick answer
Start on Claude Free, move to Pro when you hit its limits or need Opus, Research or Claude Code, and consider Max only if you use Claude heavily all day and Pro's limits still get in your way. Anthropic lists Pro at $17 a month billed annually ($20 billed monthly) with at least 5x the usage of Free per 5-hour session, and Max from $100 a month with 5x or 20x Pro usage.

What do I get with Claude Pro that Free does not have?
Anthropic's pricing page lists these differences: Pro adds Opus (Free has Sonnet and Haiku only), Research, Claude Code, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, scheduled tasks, and at least 5x the usage of Free per 5-hour session. Free already includes web search, file creation, code execution, memory, connectors, skills and Artifacts, but caps Projects at five.
So the real question is usually limits and Research. If you only use Claude for a few drafts a day, Free may be enough. If you regularly run into the usage limit, or you want it to research a topic with sources, Pro is the step. The free Claude Research lesson shows what that looks like.
Is Claude Max worth it?
Max is for heavy, sustained use. Anthropic describes it as for people who work with Claude all day, and lists 5x or 20x Pro usage, higher output limits, priority access at peak times and early access to advanced features, starting from $100 a month. That is roughly five times the Pro price to start, so the useful test is simple: are you hitting Pro's limits often enough that it blocks paid work? If not, stay on Pro. If yes, price the time you lose against the extra cost.
Anthropic's page does not give exact message counts, so check how much you actually use before upgrading rather than guessing.
Should I pay monthly or annually for Claude Pro?
Anthropic lists Pro at $17 a month on annual billing, which is $200 paid up front, or $20 a month billed monthly. Annual saves about $40 a year if you will use it all year, and monthly lets you stop anytime. If you are still deciding, start monthly for a few weeks, then switch if you keep using it.
Is it safe to use Claude Free or Pro with client information?
Anthropic's pricing page lists model training as opt-out on Free, Pro and Max, and says Team and Enterprise plans do not train on your content by default. For client work, use a business plan your company controls and follow its rules on what staff can paste, and leave out any detail the draft does not need. The glossary entry on AI training opt-out explains the setting, and the glossary entry on data minimization is a good habit.
