What are saved memories in ChatGPT?

Quick answer

Saved memories are the individual facts ChatGPT has stored to personalize later chats, such as where you work or how you like answers. You see the list in Settings, Personalization, under ChatGPT memory, by opening the saved memories link. Each one can be deleted on its own with ··· then Delete.

Why it matters for a small business

A memory outlives the chat it came from. If someone asked ChatGPT to remember a client, deleting that chat leaves the memory in place, and the client's details can turn up in a different conversation weeks later.

Deleting one memory at a time keeps the useful ones (your firm name, your preferred format) and removes only what should not be there. The same window has Delete all memories, which wipes everything; it is not a cleanup tool. Enable memory, at the top of Personalization, turns the whole feature on or off.

The window that lists them now carries a note that this is a legacy version of memory and that ChatGPT's improved memory keeps itself up to date from your chats. In practice that means two habits. Check the saved memories list after any cleanup, because a fact you asked ChatGPT to remember stays there until you delete it. And decide on Enable memory for each login: useful for one person working alone, risky on an account the whole office shares, where one client's details could surface in another client's work. A Temporary Chat avoids the question for one-off sensitive jobs.

In a real lesson: Clear Client Data Out of ChatGPT Before It Becomes a Problem: Delete Chats, Clear Memory and Use Temporary Chat

In the Clear Client Data Out of ChatGPT lesson, Morgan's saved memories list has three entries: the firm name, a formatting preference, and "Client Dana Okafor (Okafor Family Trust) owes $2,350 for the Q3 return."

Morgan points at the client memory, clicks its ···, then Delete. The other two stay. That one step is what the chat deletion earlier in the lesson could not do.

Common confusions

Saved memories vs chat history

Chat history is your list of conversations. Saved memories are separate facts drawn from them. Deleting one does not delete the other.

Saved memories vs custom instructions

Custom instructions are text you write yourself. Saved memories are facts ChatGPT chose, or was asked, to keep.

Tips

  • After deleting a chat with client details, check saved memories for anything it left behind.
  • On a login more than one person uses, consider switching Enable memory off.
  • Use Temporary Chat for sensitive work, so nothing is added to memory in the first place.
