What is an API endpoint?

Quick answer

An API endpoint is one specific address in an API, such as a URL ending in /users or /v1/run, that does one job. You send a request to it with a method like GET or POST, and it answers with data, usually as JSON.

Why it matters for a small business

An API is the whole service. The endpoint is the counter you walk up to. When an operations team connects a CRM, a billing tool or a data provider to n8n, most of the setup is picking the right endpoint and sending it what it expects. Get the address wrong and nothing happens, or worse, the wrong thing happens. Get it right and a job that took a person an hour runs in a second.

Endpoints are also how you read API docs quickly. Each one lists its address, its method, the fields it takes and what comes back. Once you can read that pattern, a new tool stops being a project for a developer and becomes a short checklist: address, method, key, body. That is the difference between waiting weeks for an integration and building it this afternoon.

In a real lesson: ProLevelMax in n8n: Keep Your Reddit Workflow Alive After the RSS Shutdown

In the ProLevelMax Reddit lesson, Maya Chen at Tallgrass Books (made up) sets the n8n HTTP Request node to POST and the URL to https://prolevelmax.com/v1/run. The lesson points out that it is the same address for every source. The JSON body says which one: procli_reddit_c, the Subreddit feed.

That is a common design. Instead of one endpoint per platform, ProLevelMax has a small set, which its docs name as discover, inspect, run, runs and whoami. The HTTP Request basics lesson shows the other common style, where Harbor Lane Marketing (made up) calls /users to list clients and /posts to send a note, one endpoint per kind of record.

Common confusions

API endpoint vs API

The API is the whole service a company offers. An endpoint is one address inside it. An API can have one endpoint or hundreds.

API endpoint vs HTTP method

The endpoint says where. The HTTP method says what you want done there, such as GET to read or POST to send. The same endpoint can behave differently for each.

API endpoint vs query parameter

A query parameter is an extra name and value added after a question mark at the end of the address. It narrows the request but does not change which endpoint you call.

Tips

  • Copy the endpoint from the provider's docs instead of typing it.
  • Check that the method in n8n matches the one the docs list for that endpoint.
  • If a call fails, read the HTTP status code first: a 404 usually means the address is wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Is an endpoint the same as a URL?
An endpoint is written as a URL, but it is more specific: one address that does one job, together with the method it expects.
How do I find an API's endpoints?
In the provider's API docs. Each endpoint usually shows its address, method, the fields it takes and an example response.
Why does ProLevelMax use one endpoint for every source?
The body names the source, so one HTTP Request node setup works for Reddit and every other source. You change the JSON, not the address.
