What is a persistent agent?
Quick answer
A persistent agent is an AI agent that keeps its state between sessions: what it learned about you, the files it was working on, open browser sessions and where the project stands. You can come back tomorrow and pick up where it left off, without re-explaining the job.

Why it matters for a small business
Re-explaining is the hidden cost of using AI at work. Every fresh chat needs your context again: the client, the format, what was already done. A persistent agent keeps that context, so a multi-week job like keeping a proposal current or tracking a hiring pipeline can live with one agent instead of being rebuilt from notes every Monday.
Persistence also changes the risk. Whatever the agent remembers, it can reuse, and that includes client details it picked up from connected apps. OpenAI's help center notes that disconnecting an app from a dot does not delete what the dot already learned, and that you delete a dot's own memories by resetting it. Before you give a persistent agent client data, decide what it may keep, the way ChatGPT data controls work for ordinary chats.
What an agent can keep between sessions
| What persists | Why it helps | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Memory of your preferences | Fewer instructions each time | That it remembers the right rules |
| Files and work in progress | Projects carry over days | Who else can see them |
| Connected app data | It knows the latest status | What it keeps after you disconnect |
In a real lesson: ChatGPT Projects: Keep Your Brand Voice, Files and Instructions in One Place
The free ChatGPT Projects lesson shows the simplest form of persistence: a Project keeps your brand voice instructions, price list and style guide, so every new chat in it starts with that context.
A persistent agent goes a step further. It keeps not just files and instructions but the state of the work itself, such as which drafts were approved and what changed since the last version.

Common confusions
Persistent agent vs ChatGPT memory
Memory saves facts about you for future chats. A persistent agent also keeps the job itself: open tasks, files and progress.
Persistent vs always-on
Persistent means it remembers between sessions. Always-on means it works without being asked. An agent can be one without the other.
Tips
- Tell it what not to remember, such as client account numbers.
- Review its saved memories now and then, and correct anything wrong.
- Know how to reset it, and save any results you need first.

Frequently asked questions
- Is a ChatGPT Project a persistent agent?
- No. A Project keeps files, instructions and chats together, but it does not act on its own. It gives persistent context, not a persistent worker.
- Can I make a persistent agent forget something?
- It depends on the tool. For a ChatGPT dot, resetting deletes its conversations, saved memories and scheduled tasks; disconnecting an app alone does not.
- Why does persistence matter for business?
- Because most office work spans days. An agent that remembers where the job stands saves the re-briefing time that eats into every fresh chat.
