Foxit vs Adobe Acrobat for AI PDF and Contract Review (2026)

Quick answer

Pick Foxit if you want to try AI contract and PDF review without paying first: as of October 2026 every Foxit account gets 300 AI credits a month at no cost, and its PDF Editor costs less per year than Acrobat Pro. Pick Adobe Acrobat if your office already works in Acrobat and wants AI inside the same app; on Adobe's pricing page AI Assistant is included in the Acrobat Studio plan, not in Standard or Pro. Both answer questions about a PDF with citations that point back to the source.

This page is for office managers, AP clerks, paralegals, HR coordinators and agents who read contracts and long PDFs for a living. Prices are as listed on each vendor's own pages as of October 2026. Stepthrough tested Foxit Workspace hands-on on a real four-page contract in October 2026. We did not test Acrobat AI Assistant hands-on, so the Acrobat details below come only from Adobe's pages. Which is cheaper for AI PDF review, Foxit or Acrobat?

For trying it out, Foxit, because it has a free AI allowance and Adobe's pricing page lists AI Assistant only with Studio (or Express and an add-on, per Adobe's AI Assistant page). As of October 2026 Foxit says every account gets 300 AI credits a month at no cost, and its AI Assistant subscription adds 2,000 credits a month for $49.99 a year. Acrobat Studio, the Acrobat plan that includes AI Assistant, is $24.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly.

Credits are the catch on the Foxit side. In our test, one plain-English contract summary used 64 credits and a table of renewal and termination terms used 29, so 300 free credits cover a few contracts a month, not a whole legal department. Foxit also says Local AI on supported devices uses no credits; we did not test that. Plans change often, so check the Foxit AI pricing page and the Acrobat pricing page before you buy.

What did Stepthrough find testing Foxit on a real contract?

We uploaded a four-page bookkeeping services agreement (made-up companies) to a Foxit Workspace project on 12 October 2026 and asked for a plain-English summary. It answered in about 40 seconds, and every figure matched the PDF: the monthly fee, the late fee, the 90-day non-renewal window, the early-exit fee and the liability cap. A second question returned a seven-row table of renewal and termination terms with the right section numbers.

The citations were the useful part. Clicking the icon after a claim opened the contract beside the chat with the exact sentence highlighted, which turns checking from a reread into a click. The AI then built a one-page Document as a draft; we clicked Accept All and downloaded it.

Two limits worth knowing. The Workspace preview is a read-only reflowed view of the PDF, with no highlight or comment tools, so markup belongs in the desktop editor or another tool. And signing is a separate product, Foxit eSign, which we did not test. The first time you open Workspace, an AI notice says your content is processed by Microsoft Azure OpenAI; read it before you upload client documents.

Is Acrobat AI Assistant better for contracts?

We cannot say from our own testing, because we did not test Acrobat AI Assistant hands-on. On Adobe's AI Assistant page, Adobe says it can summarize long documents, answer questions about a PDF, generate outlines and extract key points, with citations that link back to the source, and that PDF Spaces can combine several files. Those are the same jobs the Foxit lesson covers.

The practical question for most offices is where you already work. If everyone edits, comments and signs in Acrobat, adding Studio keeps the AI in the same app. If you mainly need a careful first read of contracts and invoice packets, Foxit's free credits let you test the workflow on your own documents before paying for anything.

Can either tool replace a lawyer's contract review?

No. Both are a fast first read that helps you find the clauses that matter and ask better questions. The habit that makes either one safe is the same: ask for section numbers, click the citation on every number and date that costs money, and have a lawyer read anything large, long or unusual. The glossary entries on the auto-renewal clause and the limitation of liability clause explain two of the clauses to check first.

Only upload documents your company allows you to share with an AI service, whichever tool you choose. Check your company's approved tools and the vendor's AI and privacy terms before you put client contracts into either one.

Who is each one for?

Pick Foxit if

You want to try AI contract or PDF review without a subscription, you review a handful of documents a month, or you want a cheaper annual PDF editor. Practise the whole workflow free in the Foxit contract review lesson, then compare two versions of a contract and fill and sign a form without printing in Foxit PDF Editor.

Pick Adobe Acrobat if

Your team already edits, comments on and signs PDFs in Acrobat and wants AI in the same app, and you are ready to pay for a plan that includes AI Assistant, such as Acrobat Studio. Start with the free trial on your own documents, and check each answer's citation the same way.

Key takeaways

Frequently asked questions

Is Foxit AI free?

Partly. As of October 2026 Foxit says every account gets 300 AI credits a month at no cost. In our test a contract summary used 64 credits, so heavy use needs the paid AI Assistant subscription or a PDF Editor plan.

Does Acrobat Pro include AI Assistant?

Not according to Adobe's pricing page as of October 2026, which lists AI Assistant with Acrobat Studio. Adobe's AI Assistant page also mentions an add-on and Acrobat Express, so check the current options on adobe.com.

Can Foxit Workspace highlight or comment on a PDF?

Not in the Workspace preview we tested in October 2026, which is a read-only reading view. The AI can build a one-page document you download instead.

Can I sign contracts in Foxit Workspace?

No. Signing is a separate Foxit product, Foxit eSign, which comes with PDF Editor+ according to Foxit's pricing page. We did not test it.

Where do these prices and features come from?

Every price and feature on this page was checked against the vendor's own page, as of October 2026. No numbers here are estimates or third-party figures. The example businesses in the Stepthrough lessons are made up.
