ChatGPT Dots: OpenAI Launches Always-On Agents That Keep Working Between Chats
Recurring office checks, like new invoices or vendor follow-ups, can run every morning without anyone remembering to start them.
What happened
On September 29, 2026, OpenAI announced dots, always-on agents in ChatGPT that keep working on a goal between your conversations. Each dot is powered by GPT-6 Astra and has its own cloud computer and browser, and through plugins it can connect to over 4,000 apps. You can message a dot in ChatGPT on desktop, web and mobile, and in Slack and Microsoft Teams, and it can run reminders and recurring checks you schedule. OpenAI says dots start with built-in rules for when to act and when to ask, and Custom rules let you allow, require approval for or block specific actions. Rollout began the same day and is gradual, so access can take several days to reach an account. Source: OpenAI: Introducing dots (September 29, 2026).
Who gets it, and what it costs
- Pro: users over 18, outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK.
- Business Premium: all supported ChatGPT regions.
- Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare: a beta your workspace admin must turn on (off by default).
- Not included: Free, Go and Plus. OpenAI says it plans to expand to more users but has not given a date.
Your first dot is included in Pro or Business Premium at no extra cost, and chatting with it does not count toward your ChatGPT usage limits. Deeper work uses an allowance in your plan, and tasks a dot starts in ChatGPT Work or Codex count toward those limits as usual. OpenAI’s pricing page lists Pro from $100 a month.
What it means for an office team
The most basic use for an office team is a recurring check that ends in a short report. For example: every weekday at 8 AM, the dot reads new invoice emails in Gmail and posts one summary to #finance in Slack, with the vendor, amount and due date, and flags anything due this week.
Nobody has to remember to look, and a person still approves every payment. Connect only the apps the job needs, write the limits into the job (read only, never reply or pay), and review the first few summaries against your inbox.
