What is a filter in Zapier?
Quick answer
Filter by Zapier is a built-in step you add to a Zap so it only continues when the data meets your conditions, for example "Service (Text) Contains Tax". If the data does not match, the Zap stops at the filter and the steps after it do not run. Zapier's help center says filter steps do not count as tasks.

Why it matters for a small business
Not every new email, form response or row deserves the same action. Without a filter, a Zap that posts to Slack for every inquiry also posts for spam, test entries and existing clients. A filter lets you say "only these", so the people on the other end only see what matters.
Filters also protect your usage. Because Zapier counts a task for each successful action, stopping unwanted runs before the action steps saves tasks. A filter placed right after the trigger is often the cheapest improvement you can make to a busy Zap.
Where you'll use it: in the Zap editor, click the plus between two steps and choose Filter. You pick a field from an earlier step, a condition such as (Text) Contains or (Number) Greater than, and a value. You can add AND or OR rules. In Zap history, a run stopped by a filter shows as filtered, not as an error.
In a real lesson: Never Miss a New Client Inquiry using Zapier
In the free Your First Zap lesson, Northgate Accounting (made up) builds a Zap where a new Google Forms response creates a row in its Client Inquiries sheet. Every inquiry should be logged, so the lesson has no filter.
Say the firm later adds a second action that texts a partner about urgent work. A Filter between the sheet step and the text, with "What service do you need? (Text) Contains Tax" as the rule, would keep the log complete while only tax inquiries reach the partner's phone.

Common confusions
Filter vs Paths
A filter is one yes or no gate: continue or stop. Paths send the data down different branches, each with its own rules and steps.
Zapier filter vs n8n Filter node
They do the same job. The n8n Filter node drops items that fail its conditions and passes the rest on.
Tips
- Test the filter with one record that should pass and one that should not.
- Text conditions are exact about spelling; use Contains rather than Exactly matches when people type freely.
- Put filters as early in the Zap as you can.

Frequently asked questions
- Does a filtered Zap run use a task?
- The filter step itself does not count as a task, and the actions after it do not run, so a filtered run uses no tasks for those steps.
- Can a filter check more than one field?
- Yes. Add more conditions with AND (all must match) or OR (any can match).
