What is prompt testing?
Quick answer
Prompt testing means running the same task with two versions of a prompt and comparing the answers against what you needed. Keep the input identical, change one thing at a time, and judge by facts, such as whether owners and dates were captured.

Why it matters for a small business
People often assume a longer prompt is better, or that a cleverer prompt is. A test replaces opinion with evidence. When you run the same input twice, you see what the new wording actually changed, and whether it added value or only length.
Test with real work and a clear check. "Does the recap list who does what by when?" is a better test than "does it sound good?" Start a new chat for each version so the first answer does not influence the second.
In a real lesson: The Prompter AI: Prove a Better Prompt Works on Your Own Meeting Notes
In The Prompter AI lesson, you recap the same weekly meeting notes from Harbor Insurance Agency (made up) two ways. The first prompt is just: Summarize these meeting notes. The answer is readable and the facts are right, but it never says who does what by when.
You open a New chat and ask again with Role, Context, Task and Format, plus a guardrail: do not invent dates or owners. The result is a two-sentence summary, a table with Action, Owner and Due date, and a Still open list. It writes "Not stated" for the renewal calls instead of guessing.
You then write up what you started with, what you changed, the tool and what happened for the forum's weekly challenge.

Common confusions
Prompt testing vs AI evals
AI evals score many outputs, often with automated checks. Prompt testing is the small, manual version that one person can do in minutes.
Prompt testing vs iterating
Iterative prompting improves one answer through follow-ups. Testing compares two separate runs from the same input.
Tips
- Change one thing at a time so you know what caused the difference.
- Write down your check before you look at the answers.
- Try the better prompt on a second, different input before you trust it.

Frequently asked questions
- What is prompt testing?
- Running the same task with two prompt versions and comparing the results against a clear check, so you know if the change helped.
- How do I test a prompt?
- Use the same input, start a new chat for each version, change one thing, and compare against a specific check such as owners and dates.
- Is a longer prompt always better?
- No. A test shows whether extra words changed the result. Often the gain comes from facts, a clear task and a format, not length.
