What is context engineering in AI?
Quick answer
Context engineering is the practice of deciding everything an AI model sees when it answers: the instructions, the facts, the files, earlier messages and tool results. Prompt engineering is about wording the request; context engineering is about giving the model the right information for this job and nothing that will mislead it.

Why it matters for a small business
Most bad AI answers at work aren't caused by weak wording. They come from missing facts (so the model guesses), stale facts (last week's price) or leftover facts from another task. Getting the context right fixes all three, and it matters even more for agents, which pull in tool results and documents as they go.
In practice it is a set of habits: one job per chat, a fact sheet instead of memory, project instructions for rules you repeat, a knowledge base for documents, and a fresh start when a chat gets cluttered.
In a real lesson: Stop Losing Context: When to Start a New Chat vs Keep Going using ChatGPT
Stop Losing Context is context engineering without the name. The Harbor Street Bakery office manager copies Oakwood Library's facts from a Google Doc and asks for a quote that uses only those facts. When the headcount changes to 100, she types one line in the same chat, because the right context is already there.
For Pine Ridge Rotary she clicks New chat and attaches only their facts file. The quote shows 40 guests and nothing about the library. The lesson's rule of thumb sums it up: same customer and task, stay; new customer or task, start fresh with just the facts for that job.

Common confusions
Context engineering vs prompt engineering
Prompt engineering is how you word the request. Context engineering is what information surrounds it. You need both, but missing context causes more errors.
Context engineering vs fine-tuning
Fine-tuning changes the model with training. Context engineering changes only what you give it for each task, so it is faster and easy to update.
Tips
- Keep one fact sheet per customer and attach it instead of retyping.
- Say "use only these facts; ask me if something is missing."
- When a chat gets long and muddled, ask for a short summary, check it and start a new chat with it.
- Put rules you repeat every time into project instructions.

Frequently asked questions
- Is context engineering replacing prompt engineering?
- It extends it. Wording still matters, but giving the model the right facts and leaving out the wrong ones usually matters more.
- Do I need technical skills for context engineering?
- No. Attaching the right file, starting a new chat for a new task and using project instructions are all context engineering.
