What is AI alignment?
Quick answer
AI alignment is the work of making AI systems do what their users and makers actually intend, and not something harmful or unintended. In practice it covers training a model to be helpful and honest, to refuse dangerous requests, and to follow the right person's instructions instead of text slipped in by someone else.

Why it matters for a small business
Every major AI lab has alignment or safety teams, and the methods include preference training such as RLHF, written principles, and testing for harmful behavior before release. Alignment is never finished: new abilities, like browsing the web or acting in apps, create new ways for a model to be misled.
For an office, alignment shows up as everyday trust questions. Will the assistant follow my instruction or the hidden one in this email? Will the agent stop before it pays someone? Good alignment helps, but your own limits and approvals are what you control.
In a real lesson: Catch a Poisoned Email Before Your AI Assistant Obeys It using Claude
In Catch a Poisoned Email Before Your AI Assistant Obeys It, Priya pastes a fake vendor email into a new Claude chat. A hidden line tells the AI to reply PINEAPPLE and call the invoice approved. In the real test on October 15, 2026, Claude didn't obey: it wrote a normal summary and noted the hidden text.
That is alignment working: the model followed Priya, not the stranger's email. The lesson is clear that it was one email, on one day, with one assistant, so it adds a guard instruction and keeps the rule that nothing is paid or approved until a person does it.

Common confusions
AI alignment vs guardrails
Alignment is built into the model through training. Guardrails are extra rules and filters added around it by the app or by you.
AI alignment vs AI safety
They overlap. AI safety is the wider field, including misuse and security; alignment is specifically about the model's goals matching what people intend.
Tips
- Don't rely on the model's training alone; add your own limits in the prompt or agent settings.
- Keep a person approving anything that sends, pays or signs.
- Re-test important behavior after a model update.

Frequently asked questions
- Why is AI alignment hard?
- People's intentions are hard to state completely, and models meet situations nobody tested. A rule that works in one case can be gamed or misread in another.
- Does alignment mean the AI can't make mistakes?
- No. An aligned model can still get facts wrong. Alignment is about intent and behavior, not accuracy.
- Who works on AI alignment?
- Research teams at AI labs, universities and nonprofits. Their methods show up in the models you use every day.
