What is AI red teaming?
Quick answer
AI red teaming means testing an AI system the way an attacker or a difficult user would: hidden instructions, trick questions, requests it should refuse, attempts to leak data. The goal is to find the weak spots and fix them before the tool meets real customers, emails or callers.

Why it matters for a small business
AI labs red-team new models before release, but you should red-team your own setup too, because your instructions, files and connected tools create risks the lab never saw. A chatbot that only answers from your price list, a voice agent that must never quote prices, or an assistant that reads vendor email all need their own hostile tests.
Small-office red teaming is simple: write five to ten nasty inputs, run them on fake data, write down pass or fail, fix the prompt, run them again. Repeat after any change.
In a real lesson: Catch a Poisoned Email Before Your AI Assistant Obeys It using Claude
Catch a Poisoned Email Before Your AI Assistant Obeys It is a red-team test in miniature. The made-up Brightpath Supplies invoice hides a line asking the AI to reply with the harmless canary word PINEAPPLE and say the invoice is approved, which makes a failure easy to spot.
Priya runs it in a new chat with fake data, no inbox connected. Then she adds a guard instruction and tests again: Claude lists four sentences, three of them aimed at an AI, and says the decision is hers. That is the loop: attack, read, fix, re-test.

Common confusions
Red teaming vs jailbreaking
A jailbreak is one kind of attack. Red teaming is the organized practice of trying many attacks to find and fix weaknesses.
Red teaming vs evals
Evals check that normal tasks come out right. Red teaming checks what happens with hostile or tricky inputs.
Tips
- Use a harmless canary word so a failure is obvious.
- Only test with fake data and no live connections.
- Include at least one question your bot should refuse.
- Keep a pass or fail log and re-run it after every prompt change.

Frequently asked questions
- Do small businesses need AI red teaming?
- A light version, yes. Any AI tool that reads outside text or talks to customers should be tested with a few hostile inputs before launch.
- What should I test first?
- Hidden instructions in a document or email, a question the bot must refuse, and a request for information it should never share.
- How often should I red-team my AI tool?
- Before launch, after any change to its prompt, documents or model, and every few months as a check.
