What is the difference between an AI agent and an AI assistant?

Quick answer

An AI assistant answers a question or drafts something when you ask, then waits for your next instruction. An AI agent is given a goal, works out the steps itself, uses tools such as a spreadsheet or an inbox, and makes small decisions along the way. An assistant helps with a task. An agent runs a job.

Why it matters for a small business

The word agent is used loosely now, which makes it hard to know what you are buying or building. The practical difference is who holds the plan. With an assistant, you hold it: you ask, read, copy and ask again. With an agent, the tool holds it: you set the goal and the limits, and it decides what to do next.

That is why the two need different handling. An assistant needs a good prompt. An agent also needs boundaries, such as what it may touch, when it should stop and what a person must approve, because it can take steps you did not spell out. See AI agent, chatbot and automation for each piece on its own.

Assistant, agent and automation at a glance

AutomationA fixed rule you wroteThe same steps every time

Real products blur these lines, so judge a tool by how it behaves, not by its label.

In a real lesson: AI Agent vs Chatbot vs Automation: One Job Done Three Ways

In the AI Agent vs Chatbot vs Automation lesson, a made-up pet grooming business has six unpaid invoices to chase. The chatbot, acting as an assistant, writes a reminder template and leaves the rest to you. The automation sends the same reminder to everyone past a date.

Then ChatGPT's Work mode, which acts as an agent, reads the list, decides the steps, drafts the right reminders and flags the one tricky invoice for a person. The difference is the plan: the assistant answers, the agent takes the job, and that is also why you read what the agent produced before anything goes out.

Common confusions

Agent vs automation

An automation follows a fixed rule and never uses judgment. An agent chooses its own steps, which is more flexible and less predictable.

Agent vs smarter model

A stronger model writes better answers. An agent is about the loop of planning and using tools, and it can use any model.

Tips

  • Start with an assistant. Move to an agent once the task has several steps you repeat.
  • Give an agent a goal, a limit on what it may touch and a point where it must ask.
  • Read the first few outputs of any agent before you trust it with a client.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT an assistant or an agent?
Both, depending on the mode. Plain chat behaves like an assistant. Modes that plan steps and use tools for you behave like an agent.
Are AI agents better than assistants?
Not always. An agent suits a multi-step job with some judgment. For a single draft or answer, an assistant is simpler and easier to check.
Do AI agents need human approval?
For anything that reaches a client or spends money, yes. Set the agent up to stop and ask before those steps.
