Which Google Sheets module should I use?
Pick by what the step does to the sheet.
| Module | Does | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Add a Row | Appends one row per bundle | Logging form responses, leads, invoices |
| Search Rows | Returns every row that matches a filter | Today's requests, open tasks, overdue items |
| Update a Row | Changes a row by its row number | Marking a request done after a Search Rows |
| Watch New Rows | Trigger: fires on new rows | Starting a scenario when someone adds a row by hand |
| Get a Cell / Update a Cell | Reads or writes one cell | A counter or a status cell |
| Clear a Row / Delete a Row | Empties or removes a row | Clean-up, use with care |
How do I set up Add a Row?
Choose the spreadsheet and tab, then map one value into each column.
In the lesson, Brookside Dental's form responses go to the New patient requests sheet:
- Click the small + on the right of the Google Forms module, type google sheets and click Add a Row.
- The Google connection is already filled in. Under Spreadsheet ID, click Click here to choose file and pick New patient requests.
- Open Sheet Name and pick Sheet1.
- Click each column field, such as Name (A), and in the mapping panel click the matching form answer's Value.
- Click Save.
The webhooks lesson does the same with a website form. Its form has no phone field, so Phone (C) stays empty, which is fine: an empty mapping writes an empty cell.
Why does Make show "Name (A)" instead of "A"?
Make reads row 1 as column names when Table contains headers is Yes. Keep a header row in your sheet and every column field is labelled with its name and letter, which makes mapping much harder to get wrong. The header row glossary entry explains why automation tools rely on it.
How do I set up Search Rows?
Pick the sheet, keep Table contains headers: Yes, then add a filter.
The daily summary lesson filters on Date (E) with Text operators: Equal to and the value {{formatDate(now; "YYYY-MM-DD")}}, and leaves Limit empty so it returns every match. Each matching row becomes one bundle, which a Text aggregator then joins into one email.

Free, and nothing touches your real accounts.
Start the free lessonWhat goes wrong most often?
- The sheet isn't in the list. The connection belongs to a different Google account. Create a connection with the account that owns the file.
- Columns are shifted. Someone inserted a column after the module was set up. Reopen the module so it reloads the headers, then re-map.
- Rows land below a blank gap. Add a Row appends after the last row with data in the table; stray content far below your data moves the insert point. Clear it.
- Search Rows finds nothing. Compare the filter value with the real cell. Dates stored as real dates and dates stored as text do not compare the same way.
Make Scenario Errors lists the error messages that go with these.
Key takeaways
- Add a Row logs, Search Rows reports, Update a Row changes a row you found first.
- Keep a header row and Table contains headers: Yes, so columns show their names.
- Always pick the spreadsheet and tab from the list rather than typing IDs.
- A missing sheet is almost always a connection for the wrong Google account.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I add a row to Google Sheets with Make?
Add the Google Sheets module Add a Row, choose the spreadsheet and sheet, map a value into each column and save. Every bundle that reaches it becomes a new row.
- Can Make update an existing row?
Yes, with Update a Row, but it needs the row number. Get it first with Search Rows, which returns each row's number.
- Does Make need a header row in Google Sheets?
It works without one, but with Table contains headers set to Yes, Make labels each column by its header, which makes mapping clearer.
- Where can I practice this?
In the free Make & Zapier Jump Start course, which uses a practice copy of Make and Google Sheets.
