What does remove duplicates mean in an automation?
Quick answer
Removing duplicates, or deduplication, means dropping records that have already appeared, so an automation acts on each one only once. In n8n, the Remove Duplicates node can remove items repeated within the current run, or items already processed in earlier runs, by comparing a field such as an email or an order ID.

Why it matters for a small business
Duplicates are one of the most common and embarrassing automation bugs: the same lead logged three times, the same customer emailed twice, the same invoice reminder sent every hour. They creep in when a trigger picks up an old record again, a person submits a form twice, or a failed run is retried.
The fix is to decide what makes a record unique, such as an email, an order number or a message ID, and check it before acting. Removing duplicates is one way; writing steps so they are safe to repeat, known as idempotency, is the other. Good workflows often use both.
Where you'll use it: add Remove Duplicates from the n8n node panel. Choose Remove Items Repeated Within Current Input to clean one batch, or Remove Items Processed in Previous Executions to skip anything seen before, and pick the field to compare. In sheets, the upsert action is another way to avoid double rows.
In a real lesson: n8n: Read, Add and Update Google Sheets Rows with an AI Step
In the free n8n Read, Add and Update Google Sheets lesson, Northgate Content Studio (made up) fixes a flaw in a popular template: its add step could create the same person twice. You set Column to match on to Email, so running the workflow twice never duplicates Jordan Lee.
That stops duplicates at the sheet. If the same requests also arrived from an email inbox, a Remove Duplicates node set to compare Email across previous executions would stop a repeat request before it ever reached the AI step.

Common confusions
Remove duplicates vs upsert
Removing duplicates drops repeated items before a step. An upsert lets the step itself update the existing row instead of adding a new one.
Duplicate items vs duplicate runs
Two copies of one record in a run is a data problem. The same run happening twice is a trigger or retry problem; fix it with idempotent steps.
Tips
- Pick a field that is truly unique; names are not, emails and IDs usually are.
- Clean the field first, because "Ann@x.com" and "ann@x.com" look different to a computer.
- Run the workflow twice in testing and check nothing doubled.

Frequently asked questions
- How does n8n remember items from previous runs?
- The Remove Duplicates node keeps a history of the values it has seen, and you can clear that history with its own operation.
- Can I remove duplicates in Google Sheets instead?
- Yes, Sheets has a Remove duplicates tool under Data cleanup, but that is a manual clean-up; the automation should avoid making them.
