What is a natural language query?
Quick answer
A natural language query is a question about data written in everyday words, such as "what was revenue each month?", instead of a formula, filter or database query. An AI tool works out what to look up and how to calculate it, often by writing SQL, a spreadsheet formula or Python behind the scenes.

Why it matters for a small business
Most office data questions are simple, but answering them means knowing the right formula, pivot table or database query. A natural language query skips that. You ask in a sentence and the tool translates it. When the data lives in a database, that translation is called text-to-SQL: the AI writes a SQL query from your question, runs it, and reports the result.
The risk is that the translation can be quietly wrong. The AI might pick the wrong column, include blank rows, or add up a subset by mistake. Good tools show the work, such as the query, the code or the rows they read, so you can check. Treat the answer as a fast first draft and verify any number before it goes into a report.

In n8n: Talk to Your Google Sheets with ChatGPT, you connect the template's Analyze Data node to your copy of the sample marketing sheet, open chat and type: What was the total spend for Paid Search? The agent reads the sheet, then answers. A follow-up, Now the same for Email only, works because the Memory node keeps the chat. There is no SQL here: the agent reads the sheet's rows through a tool. The lesson's checking step is the key habit: click Analyze Data in the Logs to see what it read, and filter the sheet to compare the sum, because models can slip on sums.
In Analyze a Spreadsheet, the question is total revenue each month and which category grew the most, about 1,200 Maple Hollow orders. ChatGPT usually writes and runs a little Python to add up the rows, so the totals come from the file itself, after you first had it remove duplicate orders and label blank channels.

Common confusions
Natural language query vs chat with your data
Chat with your data is the whole experience of talking to a file or sheet. A natural language query is one question within it.
Natural language query vs NLP
Natural language processing is the wider field of computers working with human language. Querying data in plain English is one use of it.
Tips
- Name the exact column and time range in your question, such as "Spend column, January to June".
- Ask for results as a table so the numbers are easy to check.
- Check one total yourself with a filter or SUM before you repeat the answer.

Frequently asked questions
- What is text-to-SQL?
- It is a natural language query against a database: the AI writes a SQL query from your question, runs it, and reports the result.
- Can natural language queries change my data?
- Only if the tool has write access. The n8n template in the lesson only reads the sheet, so it can't change it.
- Why did the AI give a different total than my spreadsheet?
- It may have read the wrong column, missed rows, or counted duplicates. Check what it read in the logs or code, then ask again more precisely.
