What does it mean to chat with your data?
Quick answer
Chatting with your data means connecting an AI agent to a spreadsheet and asking questions in plain English. The agent looks up the rows it needs and answers from them, which saves you from filtering and formulas for quick questions.

Why it matters for a small business
Most small offices keep important information in a sheet: clients, renewals, retainers. Answering a simple question usually means a filter, a sort or a formula. With a chat agent, you type the question the way you'd ask a coworker, such as which clients are At Risk, and the agent reads the sheet and replies.
The agent can only be as clear as your sheet. Put column names in row 1 and the data from row 2 down. It tends to be good at finding rows and weaker at arithmetic, so check any total before you repeat it. A read-only setup is a sensible start: it can look but cannot change anything.
In a real lesson: n8n: Talk to Your Google Sheets with ChatGPT, from Zero (Free Credits or API Key, Google, Sheet, Chat)
In the Talk to Your Google Sheets lesson, you run the books side of Ashford Advisory Group, a made-up firm. n8n's template number 7639 has five nodes: a chat trigger, the Talk to Your Data agent, an OpenAI Chat Model, Memory and a Google Sheets tool called Analyze Data.
You attach your OpenAI credential, pick the Client Roster spreadsheet and the Clients tab, and click Execute step to confirm the rows load. Then you open the chat and ask Which clients are At Risk? A follow-up like Which of those two is At Risk? works because Memory remembers the conversation.

Common confusions
Chat with data vs a formula
A formula gives the same answer every time. A chat agent can word and compute things differently from run to run, so verify important numbers.
Chat with data vs editing the sheet
In the lesson the agent only reads. Nothing in your spreadsheet is changed, and nothing is live until you Publish.
Tips
- Keep headings in row 1 short and clear.
- Ask for a list first and a total second, so you can check the rows yourself.
- Leave client-confidential sheets out of any tool your company has not approved.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the agent change my spreadsheet?
- Not in this lesson. The Analyze Data tool only reads, so the agent cannot change your sheet.
- Which model does the template use?
- The lesson types gpt-4.1-nano into the By ID option, the cheap model the template uses. An OpenAI API key is separate from a ChatGPT plan.
- Why did the agent get a total wrong?
- In the lesson's first test it found the right rows but added them wrong. Models vary between runs, so add the numbers yourself.
