What is Lucidchart?

Quick answer

Lucidchart is a cloud diagramming app from Lucid Software. You draw flowcharts, process maps, org charts and other diagrams on a shared canvas, build them from spreadsheet data, or type a prompt and let Lucid AI draft the diagram for you to edit.

Why it matters for a small business

Before you automate a process or hand it to a new hire, someone has to see it. A diagram shows the order of steps, who does each one and where the decisions are, and it is far easier to spot a missing step in a picture than in a paragraph. Lucidchart lets a team draw that picture together, with real-time co-editing.

Lucid's site lists diagram types from flowcharts, process maps and BPMN to org charts, ERDs and journey maps. Lucid AI turns text prompts into diagram content on the canvas, and a Lucid Custom GPT lets you describe a diagram in ChatGPT and open it in Lucidchart to edit and share.

It also works from data. The help center shows how to import a CSV, Excel file or Google Sheet to build an org chart, and how to create a process diagram from a CSV under File, Import, Data. Lucid lists over 100 integrations, including Jira, Confluence, Slack, Microsoft Teams and Notion.

In a real lesson: Automation Basics: Triggers, Actions and Data Mapping

The triggers and actions lesson does not use Lucidchart. Priya runs the office at Harbor Lane Bookkeeping, a made-up firm, and copies every website inquiry into a spreadsheet by hand. The lesson breaks the fix into one trigger (a new inquiry arrives) and two actions: add a row to the client tracker, then email Priya.

You then map each form field to a column, fix a Notes box that has typed words instead of the message, run a test with the sample and read the new row.

Lucidchart is where you would draw that recipe before you build it: a start shape for the trigger, a box for each action and an arrow for each hand-off, shared with the team so everyone agrees on the steps. The lesson's cheat sheet then shows how the same picture becomes a workflow in n8n, a scenario in Make or a Zap in Zapier.

Common confusions

Lucidchart vs Lucidspark

Both come from Lucid. Lucidchart is for structured diagrams such as flowcharts and org charts; Lucidspark is Lucid's virtual whiteboard for brainstorming.

A diagram vs a workflow

A Lucidchart diagram only shows the process. A workflow in n8n or Make actually runs it. Draw first, then build.

Tips

  • Draw the trigger first, then one box per action, in the order they happen.
  • Label each arrow with the data it carries, such as name or email.
  • Treat a Lucid AI draft as a first pass and check every step against how the work really happens.
