What is a general AI agent?

Quick answer

A general AI agent is an AI tool that takes a goal in plain words, makes a plan, uses whatever tools the job needs (web search, code, documents, image models) and hands back finished work, such as a research brief, a report, a slide deck or a website. Unlike a specialist agent built for one job, it handles many kinds of work.

Why it matters for a small business

For a solo founder, a general agent can do jobs that used to need several people or several apps: research, writing, design and simple web builds. The catch is that it does many things reasonably well, so you still check the output, especially numbers and anything with your name on it.

Good general agents check the plan with you before they spend time or credits, show the steps they take, and cite where facts came from. Those three habits make the work easy to check.

In the Runable market research lesson, Harbor & Pine (made up) asks Runable, a general AI agent, to research the US candle market before buying stock. Runable restates the job and asks "Does that scope work?", then searches, reads 205 sources and writes a one-page brief with a market range, five competitors and two gaps.

Common confusions

General AI agent vs chatbot

A chatbot answers from what it already knows. An agent takes actions with tools, such as searching the web or writing a file, to finish a job.

General AI agent vs workflow automation

A workflow runs the same fixed steps every time. An agent decides the steps for each new goal.

Tips

  • Describe the finished work and the decision it supports, not just the topic.
  • Read the plan the agent writes back before you approve it.
  • Check its sources and numbers before you act on them.
