What is explainable AI?
Quick answer
Explainable AI is the goal of making an AI system's answers understandable: which evidence it used, which rule it applied, why it scored something the way it did. For office work the practical version is simple: ask the AI to show its evidence, such as a quote or a citation, next to every conclusion.

Why it matters for a small business
When AI informs a decision about a person, like hiring, credit or insurance, a bare score isn't good enough. People need to see why, both to catch mistakes and because rules in some places require decisions about people to be explainable.
Large language models can't truly show their inner workings, and their own description of their reasoning may not match what happened inside. So ask for checkable evidence instead: a quote from the transcript, a citation to the page, a number from the file.
Explainability also helps you defend a decision later. A scorecard that ties each rating to a quote can be read by a manager, an auditor or the candidate's next interviewer without rerunning anything.
In a real lesson: Score Every Candidate Fairly After the Interview using ChatGPT
In Score Every Candidate Fairly After the Interview, the Willow Bend Physical Therapy panel's transcript goes to ChatGPT with a request to score Kira Delgado on four must-haves as Strong, Partial or Not discussed, each with a short quote as evidence.
That quote is the explanation. Anyone can see why insurance verification is Partial and why training other staff is Not discussed. The request also says no guessing about family, age or health, and the decision stays with people.

Common confusions
Explainable AI vs transparency
Transparency is being open that AI was used and how. Explainability is being able to see why a particular answer came out.
Explainable AI vs chain-of-thought
A model's step-by-step reasoning can help, but it isn't a reliable view of how it really decided. Evidence you can check is stronger.
Tips
- Ask for a quote, citation or number behind every score or claim.
- Use "Not stated" or "Not discussed" so gaps show instead of guesses.
- Keep people making decisions about people.
