What is a lead in sales?

Quick answer

A sales lead is a person or company that could become a customer and whose contact details you have, for example someone who filled in a demo form, called with a question or was referred. A lead hasn't been checked for fit or readiness yet; that comes next, in lead qualification.

Why it matters for a small business

Leads are the raw material of every sale. A business with no steady flow of them depends on luck and word of mouth, and one with too many it can't answer wastes the interest it paid for. Knowing where your leads come from, and how many turn into customers, tells you which marketing is worth keeping.

A lead is perishable. Someone who asked for a demo today is comparing options today, which is why speed to lead matters so much. The first jobs are simple: save the lead in your CRM or a shared sheet, reply quickly, and decide what kind of follow-up it deserves through lead qualification. AI can handle the saving and the first reply, so no lead waits for someone to check an inbox.

In a real lesson: Build an AI Demo Request Form That Qualifies Leads

In AI Demo Request Form, you build a Book a Demo page for Northwind Scheduling Software, a made-up company that sells scheduling software to small service businesses. The form asks for four things: Name, Email, What do you need help with? and Team size. Each submission is a sales lead.

Those four fields are a useful minimum. A name and email let you reply, the need tells you what to talk about and team size hints at fit. The n8n agent saves every submission as a row in a sheet called Leads, then rates it Hot, Warm or Nurture and emails one next step through Gmail.

In the test, the agent sees "a team of twelve that wants to switch this month," rates it hot and emails two demo times. The lead went from a form to a reply without anyone retyping it.

Common confusions

Lead vs prospect

Teams use these differently. Often a lead is anyone who might buy, and a prospect is a lead that has been checked and fits. Pick one meaning and write it down.

Lead vs opportunity

A lead is a possible buyer. A sales opportunity is a specific potential deal with a qualified buyer, tracked through stages toward won or lost.

Lead vs MQL

A marketing qualified lead is a lead that has shown enough interest to pass a marketing threshold. Every MQL is a lead; not every lead is an MQL.

Tips

  • Record where every lead came from, in its own column.
  • Reply to inbound leads within the hour if you can.
  • Ask only for the fields you will actually use.

Frequently asked questions

What are examples of sales leads?
Someone who fills in a demo or quote form, calls asking about pricing, downloads a guide and leaves an email, is referred by a customer, or gives you a business card at an event.
What is the difference between a lead and a customer?
A lead might buy. A customer has bought. Between the two, the lead is qualified, becomes an opportunity, and the deal is won.
Can AI generate sales leads?
AI can help attract and handle leads: writing outreach, answering inquiries and saving form submissions. It shouldn't invent contacts. Leads come from real people who showed interest or real research you can verify.
