What is reranking in AI search?
Quick answer
Reranking is a second pass in AI search. A fast first search, such as a vector search, pulls back many possible chunks; then a reranker model reads the question with each chunk and scores how well it answers it. Only the top few, in the new order, are given to the chat model.

Why it matters for a small business
Vector search is fast but rough. It finds chunks that sound similar, which is not always the chunk that answers the question: "vacation carryover" and "vacation request form" sit close together. A reranker reads more carefully, so the answer is built from the right passage and the model is less likely to guess.
It also lets you keep fewer chunks. Sending the model 3 excellent chunks instead of 10 mixed ones means shorter prompts, lower token use and clearer citations. The trade is one more model call and a little more time per question.
Where you'll use it: in RAG setups. Pinecone offers hosted reranking models, and n8n's vector store nodes can rerank results with a reranker sub-node, such as Cohere's. Check your tool's docs for the current options before you build.
In a real lesson: Answer Staff Questions from Your Own Docs using n8n + Pinecone
In the free n8n + Pinecone staff Q&A lesson, Cedar Ridge Partners' chatbot answers from the employee handbook. The AI Agent uses the Pinecone Vector Store as a tool to retrieve handbook chunks, and the system message requires a cited page or "I don't know".
The lesson does not add reranking. If staff questions often pulled back near-misses, such as the expense policy when they asked about travel booking, a reranker after the Pinecone search would push the right chunk to the top before the agent writes its answer.

Common confusions
Reranking vs semantic search
Semantic search finds candidates by meaning. Reranking reorders those candidates more carefully.
Reranking vs hybrid search
Hybrid search changes how candidates are found, mixing keywords and meaning. Reranking runs after, on whatever was found.
Tips
- Test a few real questions before and after adding a reranker.
- Retrieve more chunks, then rerank down to a few.
- Keep citing the source page so people can check.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need reranking for a small handbook?
- Often not. Try good chunking and clear prompts first, and add reranking if answers still use the wrong passage.
- Is a reranker the same as the chat model?
- No. It is usually a smaller model built only to score how well a passage matches a question.
- Does reranking stop hallucinations?
- It lowers the risk by giving the model better passages, but it does not remove it. Keep rules like citing the source and saying I don't know when the documents are silent.
