Why does AI give different answers to the same prompt?

Quick answer

Non-deterministic output means the same input does not always give the same result. Language models pick each next word with some chance involved, so asking the same question twice can give two different wordings, and sometimes two different answers. A deterministic step, like a formula, gives the same result every time.

Why it matters for a small business

A model doesn't look up one fixed answer. For each word it scores many possible next words and samples from them. Settings like temperature control how adventurous that sampling is, but even low settings rarely promise identical output, and providers update models over time.

For office work this matters most inside automations. A step that returns "Payroll" one day and "payroll issue" the next can break the rule that comes after it. The fix is to give the AI one small job, a fixed list of answers to choose from or a set format, and let a plain rule do everything that must be exact.

In a real lesson: When to Add AI to an Automation (n8n, Make or Zapier)

When to Add AI to an Automation sorts six jobs for Harbor Lane Bookkeeping. Copying inquiries into the tracker is a rule: same steps every time, and it never gets it wrong. Sorting emails by what they say is an AI step, because people word things a hundred ways.

The lesson's safe shape handles the variation: the AI step returns one label from a fixed list (new client, billing, documents), and a Rule acts on it, because fixed labels make that safe. In Chatbase, the Temperature slider starts at Reserved, which the lesson says keeps answers focused and consistent for prices and policies.

Common confusions

Non-deterministic vs wrong

Different wording each time is normal and often fine. It becomes a problem only when facts, numbers or labels change.

Non-deterministic vs random

The output is not random noise. The model picks from likely answers, so results vary within a range.

Tips

  • Run an important prompt three or four times before you trust it in a workflow.
  • Ask for a fixed list of labels or a set format, so later steps get the shape they expect.
  • Keep sums, dates and lookups in plain rules or formulas, not in the AI step.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make ChatGPT give the same answer every time?
Not fully. A clear prompt, examples and a fixed format make answers much more consistent, but the wording can still change.
Does temperature 0 make AI deterministic?
It makes output much more consistent, but providers don't promise identical answers, so still test and check.
Is non-deterministic output a bug?
No. It is how language models generate text. You design around it with fixed formats and checks.
Which steps should stay deterministic?
Anything that must be exact every time: totals, dates, due-date reminders, copying data between apps and decisions about money.
