What is Coda?

Quick answer

Coda is a doc that works like an app: pages, tables, buttons and automations live in one shared document. Coda AI, its built-in assistant, can summarize a page, fill a table column, find action items and answer questions about the doc. Coda's site now says it is Superhuman Docs.

Why it matters for a small business

Teams use Coda to run things that outgrow a plain document, such as a meeting tracker, a project plan or a client onboarding checklist, with tables that hold real data and buttons that act on it. Packs connect it to tools such as Slack, Gmail, Google Calendar, Jira, Salesforce and Airtable.

Coda AI works where the data lives. Its help center describes an AI column, where you add a column, choose the AI type and pick Summarize, Find action items, Find key insights or a custom prompt, then fill the whole column at once. An AI block on the page writes a summary of a table or page that refreshes as the data changes. Coda lists a free plan, and its help center says Free plan members get an AI free trial.

In a real lesson: n8n: Turn Meeting Notes into Action Items in a Google Sheet

The meeting notes to action items lesson builds a workflow for the made-up Meridian Accounting Group that reads meeting notes from a sheet, asks AI for every action item with an owner and a due day, and writes one row per task.

Coda's Find action items column does a version of that inside the doc itself: one row per meeting, one AI column that lists what each meeting committed to. Check the owners and dates it fills in before the team works from them.

Common confusions

AI column vs AI block

An AI column writes a result for every row of a table. An AI block writes one result on the page, such as a summary of the whole table.

Coda vs a spreadsheet

A spreadsheet is a grid of cells. Coda puts tables inside a document with text, buttons and automations around them.

Tips

  • Use Find action items on a meeting notes table, then check owners.
  • Refresh AI blocks after the data changes.
  • Keep prompts in AI columns short and specific to one job.
