n8n Google Sheets Errors: Sheet Not Found and 5 More

Quick answer

Most n8n Google Sheets errors come from three settings: the Credential (wrong Google account), the Sheet (a tab code that isn't in your spreadsheet) and the column mapping (nothing mapped, or names that don't match). "Sheet with ID gid=0 not found" means the node points at a tab that doesn't exist, so pick the tab from the list again. The free n8n Google Sheets lesson hit and fixed this error in a real test.

"Sheet with ID gid=0 not found"

The node has a tab ID that isn't in the chosen spreadsheet. It happens most with templates, which ship with the tab code from the author's own sheet.

Fix: open the node, click the Sheet box and pick your tab from the list (for example Sheet1 or Content Requests). Don't type an ID or paste a URL. In the lesson's test, choosing the tab from the list cleared the error at once.

"At least one value has to be added under Values to Send"

The node is set to Map Each Column Manually and every column is empty.

Fix: map at least one column, or switch Mapping Column Mode to Map Automatically if your incoming field names equal the sheet's headers. In the Meeting to Action lesson the test run failed with this message until the mode was changed to Map Automatically, which matched Meeting, Owner, Task, Due date and Status to the same-named columns.

The spreadsheet isn't in the Document list

The credential belongs to a different Google account than the one that owns or can open the file.

Fix: click the Credential box and pick the one for your own account. n8n may pre-fill a credential; the lessons say not to trust it and to check. On n8n Cloud a new credential just asks you to sign in with Google and click Allow.

"The caller does not have permission"

Google refused the request. The account behind the credential can view but not edit, or can't open the file at all.

Fix: share the spreadsheet with that Google account as an editor, or reconnect with the account that owns it. View-only access is enough for Get row(s) but not for Append or Update.

Columns are empty or in the wrong place

Row 1 isn't a clean header row, or the field names don't match the headers.

  • Row 1 must hold one column name per cell. In the Meeting to Action lesson, the headers are typed with the Tab key between them so each lands in its own cell.
  • Map Automatically needs exact names. The meeting notes lesson uses lowercase task, owner and due because the AI's fields are lowercase.
  • If headers changed after you set up the node, reopen it so n8n reloads the column list.

Get row(s) returns no items

The tab is empty below the header, the node has a filter that matches nothing, or it points at the wrong tab. Click Execute step and read the OUTPUT: the lessons expect a specific count (8 items, 5 items, 2 items), which is a quick sanity check.

n8n: Read, Add and Update Google Sheets Rows with an AI Step. Learn n8n's three core Google Sheets moves on a made-up request list: read the rows, add a new one without duplicates, then let an AI step write a description and update each row. You do every step yourself in a practice copy of n8n, it checks your work as you go, and “Do it for me” finishes any step you get stuck on. Free, and nothing touches your real accounts.

Rows are added twice

That isn't an error message, but it's the most common sheet problem. Plain Append row adds a row on every run. Use Append or update row with a Column to match on; see n8n Append or Update Row.

A checklist before you publish

  1. Credential is your own Google account.
  2. Document and Sheet were picked from the lists.
  3. Row 1 has clean, unique headers.
  4. Every needed column is mapped, or names match for Map Automatically.
  5. Append vs Append or update is a deliberate choice.
  6. You ran it twice and counted rows.

Key takeaways

  • gid=0 not found means a tab ID that isn't in your spreadsheet; pick the tab from the list.
  • "At least one value has to be added" means nothing is mapped; map a column or use Map Automatically.
  • A missing spreadsheet or a permission error points at the credential's Google account.
  • A clean header row prevents most mapping problems.

Frequently asked questions

What does "Sheet with ID gid=0 not found" mean in n8n?

The node is looking for a tab ID that isn't in the selected spreadsheet. Open the Sheet box and choose the tab from the list.

Why can't n8n see my Google Sheet?

The credential is signed in to a different Google account, or that account has no access to the file. Pick or create a credential for the owning account.

Do I need a Google Cloud project for n8n Google Sheets?

On n8n Cloud, no: the credential signs in with Google directly. Self-hosted n8n needs your own OAuth client.
