What is a pitch deck?

Quick answer

A pitch deck is a short slide presentation that explains a business to investors, lenders or partners. It usually covers the problem, the solution, the market, traction, the business model, the team and the ask, meaning how much money is being raised and what it will be used for.

Why it matters for a small business

A deck is how a one-page plan becomes a meeting. Founders, and the consultants and accountants who help them, often have the facts long before they have slides. AI deck builders now draft a first version from a short company description, which turns a weekend of formatting into a few minutes of reviewing.

The review is the real job. An AI draft can invent figures that sound right and can leave template sample data in place. Every number in front of an investor should trace back to your own plan. See hallucination and the hallucination check.

In a real lesson: Turn a One-Page Business Plan into an Investor-Ready Deck using Slidebean

In the free Slidebean pitch deck lesson, Dana at Ledgerly, a made-up bookkeeping startup with 84 clients, pastes a one-page plan into Slidebean and gets a 13-slide draft in a couple of minutes.

Then the checking starts. On the Problem slide the AI added "$1 billion a year" and "$3,000 per firm", neither of which was in the plan, and several slides still showed the template's placeholders. Dana replaces each with a fact from her plan before anyone else sees the deck.

Common confusions

Pitch deck vs business plan

A business plan is the long written version. A pitch deck is the short visual one you present, often with the plan as backup.

Pitch deck vs one-pager

A one-pager is a single page you can send cold. A deck is meant to be walked through, in a meeting or on a call.

Tips

  • Write the one-page plan first. The deck is easier when the facts already exist.
  • Keep a number check beside you: for each figure, name the line in your plan it came from.
  • Check what your plan allows before you count on exporting or sharing, since free plans often limit both.

Frequently asked questions

How many slides should a pitch deck have?
There is no fixed rule. Many are 10 to 15 slides, and Slidebean's AI built 13 in the free lesson. Fewer, clearer slides are usually easier to follow.
Can AI write a pitch deck for me?
It can draft one from a short company description, as Slidebean does in the lesson. You still verify every number and rewrite soft language before an investor sees it.
Is Slidebean free?
It has a free Basic plan. In our test, building and editing worked, but exporting needed a paid plan. Check slidebean.com/pricing for current plans.
