What is deep learning?

Quick answer

Deep learning is a kind of machine learning that uses neural networks with many layers stacked on top of each other. Early layers pick up simple patterns, later layers combine them into complex ones. It is the approach behind today's chatbots, speech-to-text, image generators and voice agents.

Why it matters for a small business

When a vendor says a product "uses deep learning", it usually means the product learned from a large set of examples instead of following hand-written rules. That is the reason modern AI can understand speech with accents, read handwriting or write a reasonable email: those tasks are too varied to describe with rules.

Deep learning needs a lot of data and computing power to train, which is why most businesses use models built by large AI companies rather than training their own. Your job is choosing the tool, giving it good instructions and checking its output, not building the network.

In a real lesson: Your First Voice Agent in ElevenLabs: An After-Hours Receptionist

In Your First Voice Agent in ElevenLabs, you build Riley, an after-hours receptionist for Cedar Creek Plumbing. The lesson describes the loop: the agent listens, turns speech into text, works out what to say with a language model and speaks the answer back in a natural voice.

Each link in that loop is a deep learning model: speech recognition, the LLM you pick under LLM, and the voice you choose from the library. You don't train any of them. You write the system prompt, pick a fast model, then read the transcript in Conversations to check what each part actually did.

Common confusions

Deep learning vs machine learning

Machine learning is the whole field of systems that learn from data. Deep learning is the part of it that uses many-layered neural networks.

Deep learning vs generative AI

Generative AI creates new text, images or audio. Most of it is built with deep learning, but deep learning also powers tools that only classify or detect.

Tips

  • Ask vendors what the model was trained to do and how they test it, not just whether it uses deep learning.
  • Read transcripts or outputs from real tests before you rely on any AI step.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it called deep learning?
Deep refers to the many layers in the neural network. More layers let the model learn more complex patterns.
Can a small business use deep learning without coding?
Yes. Tools like ChatGPT, Claude and ElevenLabs run deep learning models for you; you work with them through prompts and settings.
Is deep learning the same as AI?
No. It is one method inside AI, and today the most widely used one.
