What is artificial general intelligence (AGI)?

Quick answer

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is the idea of an AI system that can learn and do most intellectual work as well as a capable person, across many fields, not just the tasks it was built for. There is no single agreed definition or test, and whether any current system counts is debated.

Why it matters for a small business

AGI is the stated goal of several AI labs. OpenAI's charter, for example, describes it as "highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work". Because the definitions differ, headlines that AGI is near or already here are hard to check.

For planning work, the useful question is narrower: can this tool do this task reliably, with checks? Today's assistants and agents are impressive across many tasks and still make mistakes a careful person wouldn't, which is why every lesson keeps a person checking the output.

In a real lesson: AI Agent vs Chatbot vs Automation: One Job Done Three Ways

AI Agent vs Chatbot vs Automation shows what today's AI really does on a real job. Oak Hill Pet Grooming has six open invoices. ChatGPT's Work mode reads the list, does the date math, drafts three reminders, leaves them unsent and flags Ben's partial payment for Tara to decide.

That is useful judgment on a narrow task with clear limits, not general intelligence. The lesson's task tells the agent not to send anything, and Tara still checks names, amounts and dates before any email goes out.

Common confusions

AGI vs AI agent

An AI agent is a tool that plans steps and uses tools for a goal you give it. AGI is a hypothetical level of general ability. Agents exist today; whether AGI does is debated.

AGI vs generative AI

Generative AI is today's technology for creating text, images and audio. AGI describes a much broader ability that no product reliably claims to have.

Tips

  • Plan around what a tool does reliably today, tested on your own tasks.
  • Keep a person approving anything that sends, pays or promises.

Frequently asked questions

Has AGI been achieved?
There is no agreed test, so there is no agreed answer. Today's tools are strong at many tasks but still make errors that need human checks.
What is the difference between AGI and narrow AI?
Narrow AI does specific tasks, like reading receipts or drafting replies. AGI would handle almost any intellectual task without being built for it.
Should I plan my job around AGI?
Plan around what tools do today. Learning to give AI clear tasks and check its work is useful whatever comes next.
