Break Big Jobs into Steps: Prompt Chaining

ChatGPTBeginner~7 min practice23 steps

Why this matters

Ask ChatGPT for something big in one prompt (a 30-day marketing plan, a hiring process, a client onboarding plan) and you get a little of everything: vague customer groups, ideas any business could use, one line per week. It looks complete. It is too thin to use.

The problem is not the details you gave it. It is that you asked for every decision at once, and only saw the finished result, with no chance to steer.

In this module you learn prompt chaining: one big job split into small prompts, where each answer feeds the next and you check it before you build on it. The same details, a far better plan.

Robert’s intro to this module

What you’ll build

A 30-day marketing plan for Juniper Lane Café, a made-up café between a college and an office park, with slow afternoons, a $300 budget, and Instagram and Facebook pages. First you see the thin one-prompt plan. Then you build it in four steps: three customer types, five offers for one of them, a four-week calendar table, and week 1’s posts.

Along the way you catch two mistakes in the calendar (a Monday post when the café is closed Mondays, and a TikTok post it does not use), fix only those rows, and save the chain as a checklist you can reuse for any big job.

What you need

  • Nothing to start the practiceChatGPT is a practice copy, and the café’s details are pasted in for you.
  • A ChatGPT account, to do it for realA free account at chatgpt.com works. Keep every step in one chat.
  • Your business details, written onceWho you are, where, your hours and closed days, what you sell, your slow times, the channels you really use, and your budget. These go in the first message.
  • Your rules to check againstDays you are closed, channels you do not use, real prices. You check each answer against these before the next step.

Concepts

3 ideas you’ll use in the practice.

A chain is one job per prompt

Prompt chaining splits a big job into a series of small prompts. The answer to one becomes the input to the next: customers, then offers for one customer, then a calendar for one offer, then the posts.

Give each step one job, say what format you want back (a list, a table, captions under a word limit), and tell it not to jump ahead: "Don’t write the plan yet."

Pass the answer on: point at it, or paste it

In the same chat, ChatGPT can see the earlier answers, so "number 2, the remote workers" is enough.

Or paste the exact part you want to build on, like the offer you picked, into the next prompt. That removes any doubt about which idea you mean, and it works in a new chat too.

Fix one step without starting over

When an answer breaks a rule, say exactly what is wrong and what to change ("we are closed Mondays, so move the Monday post to Tuesday") and add "keep everything else the same". Only those parts change, and the work you already checked stays put.

Practice

Do every step yourself in a practice copy of the real tool. It checks your work, and “Do it for me” finishes any step you get stuck on.

Quick check

3 questions to check you’ve got it.

1. Why does the chained plan beat the one big prompt with the same details?

  • It uses a better model
  • You check and decide at each step before the next one builds on it
  • It is shorter
Show the answer

You check and decide at each step before the next one builds on it. One job per step gives you points to read, decide and correct.

2. The calendar has a post on a day you are closed. What do you send?

  • The whole first prompt again
  • "We are closed Mondays, so move that post to Tuesday. Keep everything else the same."
  • "This is wrong, try again"
Show the answer

"We are closed Mondays, so move that post to Tuesday. Keep everything else the same.". Name the problem and the fix, and protect the work you already checked.

3. You start a new chat for step 3. How does ChatGPT know which offer you picked?

  • It remembers every chat
  • Paste the offer into the prompt word for word
  • It picks the best one
Show the answer

Paste the offer into the prompt word for word. Pasting the exact part you are building on removes any doubt, in any chat.
