What are Zapier Agents?
Quick answer
Zapier Agents is Zapier's product for building AI agents. You write the agent's instructions in plain words, give it tools, which are actions in apps connected through Zapier, and optionally a trigger and knowledge sources. When it runs, the agent decides which tools to use for the job, instead of following fixed steps like a Zap.

Why it matters for a small business
A Zap is ideal when the steps never change. Some office work needs judgment: reading a lead's message, looking them up, deciding whether to reply, book or hand off. Zapier Agents lets that kind of job run on the same app connections your Zaps already use.
The usual agent cautions apply. Give the agent only the actions it needs, keep anything that reaches a customer behind a person's check, and read its activity for the first runs. Agents can make mistakes that a fixed Zap cannot, so start with low-risk jobs such as research or drafts.
Where you'll use it: Zapier Agents is reached from Zapier's app menu. You create an agent, write its instructions, add tools by choosing apps and actions, and test it. Zapier's help center documents the current screens and how agent activity counts toward usage, since both have changed as the product developed.
In a real lesson: Zapier: ChatGPT Drafts Every Reply, Signatoro Signs It
The free Zapier: ChatGPT Drafts Every Reply lesson uses AI inside a normal Zap, not an agent. Every patient email at Brookside Dental takes the same four steps, and the ChatGPT step only writes the reply. The draft waits for Dana to read and send.
An agent version would let the AI decide more, for example whether to check the booking calendar first. The AI Agent vs Chatbot vs Automation lesson explains when that extra freedom is worth it and when a fixed Zap is the safer choice.

Common confusions
Zapier Agents vs a Zap with an AI step
A Zap's AI step does one job at one point. An agent picks its own steps from the tools you give it.
Zapier Agents vs Zapier MCP
Zapier MCP lets an outside AI assistant use Zapier actions through the Model Context Protocol. Agents run inside Zapier itself.
Tips
- Write instructions as a short job description: goal, rules, and when to stop.
- Start with draft-only actions before you allow sending.
- Review the agent's activity log every day at first.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need Zapier Agents to use AI in Zapier?
- No. A Zap with a ChatGPT or AI by Zapier step handles fixed AI jobs, such as drafting a reply, more predictably.
- Can a Zapier Agent send emails by itself?
- If you give it a send action, yes. Most offices start with draft actions so a person still sends.
