What is a call summary in an AI voice agent?

Quick answer

A call summary is the short written recap that an AI voice agent or AI receptionist produces after a call: who called, what they needed and what should happen next. It sits beside the full transcript so a person can read it in seconds.

Why it matters for a small business

Nobody wants to read a ten-minute call word for word. A good summary lets the person on duty see the caller's name, number and reason in a few lines, and decide whether it can wait until morning.

A summary is also an AI's reading of the call, so it can drop a detail or soften an urgent one. Treat it as the index and the transcript as the record: for anything that matters, check the summary against the words.

In a real lesson: Build an After-Hours Intake Voice Agent for a Law Firm (ElevenLabs)

In the After-Hours Intake Voice Agent lesson, you build an intake agent called Morgan for Lindenwood Injury Law, a made-up firm, and call it from your browser as someone who was rear-ended on the way home. Afterward you open Conversations and click the call at the top of the list.

The Overview shows a short summary with the caller's details and the other driver's name. You then click the Transcription tab to read the whole call, word for word. The lesson also warns that this is where an intake team would find the message, so don't put an agent like this on a real line until a phone number and an alert are connected.

Common confusions

Call summary vs transcript

The summary is a few lines of meaning. The transcript is every word. The summary tells you where to look; the transcript settles what was said.

Call summary vs voicemail

A voicemail transcription turns one message into text. A call summary condenses a two-way conversation, including what the agent asked and answered.

Tips

  • Decide which fields every summary must include: name, number, reason and urgency.
  • Send urgent summaries to a person right away, not only to a dashboard.
  • Spot-check a few summaries a week against their transcripts and tighten the agent's instructions where they drift.

Frequently asked questions

What should a call summary include?
The caller's name and number, why they called, how urgent it is, anything the agent promised, and the next step. Missing items should say "not given" rather than being guessed.
Can I trust an AI call summary?
For sorting and triage, mostly. For anything with consequences, such as a deadline or a legal matter, read the transcript too.
Where do I find call summaries in ElevenLabs?
In the agent's Conversations list under Monitor. Open a call and the Overview shows the summary, with the transcript on its own tab.
