Copilot in Excel: Excel Canvas Turns a Workbook into a Report That Refreshes Itself
The summary page you rebuild every month from the same workbook can become a Copilot report that updates when the numbers do.
What happened
On October 2, 2026, Microsoft announced Excel canvas in Message Center post MC1485411: a Copilot capability that turns workbook data into a report with visualizations, metrics and insights. Microsoft says the reports automatically refresh as the underlying workbook data changes, and you refine the report by asking Copilot in plain language. It is coming to Excel for Windows, Excel for the web and Microsoft 365 Copilot, for users with access to Copilot in Excel. The worldwide rollout starts in mid-October 2026 and is expected to finish by the end of October 2026, and Microsoft says admins do not need to do anything to prepare. Who gets it, and what it costs
- Who: users with access to Copilot in Microsoft Excel.
- Where: Excel for Windows, Excel for the web and Microsoft 365 Copilot.
- When: worldwide rollout from mid-October to the end of October 2026.
- Admins: no action needed. Microsoft suggests telling users and updating Copilot in Excel training.
Microsoft’s post names no separate price or license beyond access to Copilot in Excel.
What it means for an office team
The basic case is the monthly sales or expense summary. Instead of copying totals into a new tab and rebuilding the charts, you ask Copilot for a report from the workbook, and next month it reflects the new rows.
Check that the report picked the right measures. A report that refreshes itself is only useful if the metric is the one your manager means (gross or net, booked or paid), so confirm the numbers against the sheet the first time.
