NotebookLM Jump Start: Cited Answers, a Briefing and a Podcast from Your Documents

What you’ll be able to do: After this jump start you can put your own documents into NotebookLM (now Gemini Notebook) and get answers that cite the exact passage: build a notebook from a client contract as a PDF, a crew handbook from Google Drive and a website link, ask a question and check the answer against the source, save it as a note and create a Briefing Doc. Then you turn a staff handbook and meeting notes into a two-host podcast with Audio Overview, customized for new hires, and ask the hosts a question in Interactive mode. The last module loads the same files into a ChatGPT Project, a Gemini Gem and a Gemini Notebook so you know which one to use for which job.

Why this course

Every office has documents nobody reads until something goes wrong: the client agreement, the crew handbook, the leave policy, last week's meeting notes. NotebookLM is the AI tool built for exactly that. It answers only from the sources you give it, shows the passage it used, and can turn the same sources into a briefing document or a podcast people will actually listen to.

The three modules follow two made-up small businesses: Harbor Light Cleaning, which just signed a dental office and needs to know what the contract requires before the crew starts, and Ridgeview Accounting, which has two new staff accountants starting Monday and a handbook nobody reads on day one. Every screen is a practice copy of the real NotebookLM screens that checks each step, and each module ends with a checklist for doing it in your own free notebook.

What you’ll build

  • Module 3: For Birch Street Auto Repair, a made-up business, you load three files (Price list 2026.pdf, Warranty and policies.pdf and Customer FAQ.docx) into a ChatGPT Project, a Gemini Gem and a Gemini Notebook, and ask each one the same customer question about a warranty claim.

Projects vs Gems vs Gemini Notebook: Which to Use

You’ll be able to: Load the same three files for a repair shop into a ChatGPT Project, a Gemini Gem and a Gemini Notebook, ask the same warranty question, compare the answers and keep a one-screen cheat sheet.

Prerequisites

  • For the practice: a web browser. Each module runs in a copy of the real tool’s screens, so you need no account and no sign-up to start module 1.
  • To do it for real: a ChatGPT account and a Google account. Each module says which one it uses.

Time to complete

About 22 minutes of hands-on practice across 3 modules (71 steps in all). Modules take 6 to 9 minutes each, so you can do one in a sitting and come back for the next.

Questions about this course

Is there a free NotebookLM tutorial or course?

Yes. NotebookLM Jump Start on Stepthrough is free: 3 hands-on modules, about 22 minutes in all, on practice copies of the real NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook) screens in your browser. No coding, no credit card and no sign-up needed to start, and a free certificate of completion for each module.

Is NotebookLM free?

Yes. NotebookLM, now called Gemini Notebook, is free with a Google account, including notebooks, cited answers, Briefing Docs and Audio Overviews. Paid Google AI plans raise the limits on notebooks, sources and audio generations. The practice on Stepthrough needs no Google account at all.

What is the difference between NotebookLM and ChatGPT?

ChatGPT answers from its general knowledge plus anything you give it; NotebookLM answers only from the sources in your notebook and cites the passage it used, which makes it the safer choice for questions about a specific contract, handbook or policy. Module 3 loads the same files into a ChatGPT Project, a Gemini Gem and a Gemini Notebook, asks the same question and compares the answers, so you finish with a cheat sheet for choosing.

What can I upload to NotebookLM?

In module 1 you add a PDF from your computer, a Google Doc from Google Drive and a website link to one notebook. NotebookLM also takes Google Slides, copied text, YouTube links and audio files. Each source becomes something the notebook can quote from.

How does the Audio Overview podcast work?

Module 2 walks through it on real screens: you add the handbook and the meeting notes, open Customize Audio Overview, keep the Deep Dive format, tell the hosts who is listening (two new staff accountants) and generate the episode. Then you play it and use Interactive mode to ask the hosts a question while it runs.

How long does the NotebookLM course take?

about 22 minutes of hands-on practice: 3 modules of 6 to 9 minutes each. It is self-paced, so you can do the first notebook now and the podcast later.
