SEO meta description prompt: free ChatGPT template

Marketing and socialMarketingWorks in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot

Updated · By Robert Breen

Use this when a page on your site shows up in Google with a description that is cut off, vague or pulled from some random sentence on the page. The meta description is the two lines under the blue link. It doesn't move you up the rankings by itself, but it is your one chance to tell a searcher why this page answers their question. This prompt writes a few options per page from facts you give it, keeps each one to a length that fits on screen, and avoids claims you can't back up.

The prompt

Copy it into ChatGPT (or Claude, Gemini or Copilot) and replace every [BLANK] with your own details. It uses the four parts from Prompt Writing 101: Role, Context, Task and Format.

Role: You are a careful SEO copywriter who writes plain, specific search-result descriptions for small business websites.
Context: The business is [BUSINESS]. The page is [PAGE] at [PAGE URL]. What the page actually offers: [PAGE FACTS]. The person searching is most likely [SEARCHER]. The search phrase we want this page to match: [SEARCH PHRASE].
Task: Write three meta description options, each 120 to 155 characters including spaces. Use the search phrase, or a natural version of it, once. Say what the reader gets and end with a plain reason to click. Use only the facts above: no promised rankings, results, prices or guarantees, and no extra keywords.
Format: A numbered list. After each option, put its character count in brackets. Then one line saying which option you would pick and why, in under 25 words. No emoji, no quotation marks around the options.

Fill in the blanks

[BUSINESS]
Your business name and what it does, in a few words.
[PAGE]
The page name, such as "SEO services" or "Holiday gift boxes".
[PAGE URL]
The address of the page, so you can keep track of which description goes where.
[PAGE FACTS]
What is really on the page: services, who it is for, what happens after someone gets in touch. Copy from the page itself.
[SEARCHER]
Who types the search and what they want, such as "a clinic owner looking for help with local search".
[SEARCH PHRASE]
The words you want the page to show up for. One phrase per run works best.

Example, filled in

A made-up example from the free lesson n8n AI Agent Tutorial: Save Social Media Ideas to Google Sheets. BrightPath Marketing is the made-up digital marketing agency from the first AI agent lesson. It helps small and midsize businesses with SEO, paid advertising, social media marketing and website design, and its own service pages need better search descriptions.

Role: You are a careful SEO copywriter who writes plain, specific search-result descriptions for small business websites.
Context: The business is BrightPath Marketing, a digital marketing agency for small and midsize businesses. The page is SEO services at brightpath.example/seo. What the page actually offers: a website audit, local search setup, monthly content updates and a plain-English monthly report, plus a free 30-minute consultation call. The person searching is most likely an owner of a small business who isn't showing up in local search and wants someone to handle it. The search phrase we want this page to match: SEO services for small businesses.

What a good answer looks like

  • Each option names something concrete from the page, such as the website audit or the monthly report.
  • The search phrase appears once and reads naturally, not jammed in.
  • The reason to click is real: the free 30-minute consultation call, because it is in the facts.
  • No line like "rank number one on Google" or "double your traffic", since you gave no such promise.

How to check it before you use it

An AI draft can sound right and still say something you never told it. Use the habit from the Reply Faster lesson: check every promise, name, date and number against what you gave it before anything goes out.

  • Count the characters yourself or paste each option into a character counter. Models often miss the count they print.
  • Open the page and make sure every claim in the description is on it. A searcher who clicks and can't find it leaves.
  • Search your own site for duplicates. Two pages with the same description compete with each other.
  • After a few weeks, look at the page in Google to see whether your description is the one showing.
