What is the effort setting in Claude?
Quick answer
Effort is a setting in Claude's model picker that controls how hard Claude thinks before it answers. Higher effort takes longer and uses more of your usage limit, and Medium is the recommended default for everyday tasks.

Why it matters for a small business
Thinking costs time. A harder question benefits from a longer think, while a simple email rewrite doesn't. Effort lets you trade speed and usage for depth. Because higher effort uses more of your limit, running it high on everything can run you out of messages sooner.
For most office tasks, the recommended Medium setting is the right place to start. If the reply misses something important, try the same prompt again with a higher effort. If you just want a quick reword, you can leave it alone.
Think of it the way you would for a coworker. You wouldn't ask a colleague to spend an hour on a reply to a two-line email, and you wouldn't ask for a five-minute answer on a contract clause. Effort is how you tell Claude which kind of request this is, and the recommended Medium suits most day-to-day office work such as customer replies, short summaries and meeting notes.
In a real lesson: Your First Chat with Claude: Models, Files and a Great First Prompt
In the lesson, after you open the model picker you click Effort and then Medium to keep the recommended setting.
Then Claude drafts a reply to an unhappy customer, and its reply flags the refund question rather than guessing. Your follow-up asks for a shorter version, two times to choose from, and a 10% credit. All of that happened at Medium effort, which shows how far the default goes for a real customer email.

Common confusions
Effort vs a better model
A stronger model and a higher effort are different knobs. One changes who answers, the other changes how long they think.
High effort vs a better prompt
A clear prompt with a role, context, task and format often helps more than turning effort up.
Tips
- Stay on Medium unless an answer needs more depth.
- Raise effort for contracts, analysis and long documents, and then read the reply even more closely than usual.
- If the first answer is thin, try the same prompt once more at a higher setting before rewriting the whole prompt.
- Remember higher effort uses more of your limit.
