Gmail AI Inbox: Your To-Dos and Deadlines Pulled Out of Email, Now for Paid Workspace Users
The deadlines and asks buried in long email threads can show up as a to-do list in Gmail, so fewer promises slip between "I’ll get back to you" and Friday.
What happened
On October 15, 2026, Google announced that Gmail’s AI Inbox, which helps users catch up on what matters most, is rolling out to paid Google Workspace users. Its two parts are suggested to-dos, which pull action items, deliverables and deadlines out of email conversations, and topics to catch up on, which summarize long threads and fast back-and-forth discussions. You open AI Inbox from the menu in Gmail on the desktop or in the mobile app. For now it is only for users in the US with English (US) as their language, and there is no admin control for it. The rollout started October 12, 2026 for Rapid Release domains and starts October 26, 2026 for Scheduled Release domains, and each can take up to 15 days to appear. Who gets it, and what it costs
- Google Workspace: Business Starter, Standard and Plus; Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus; Frontline Plus; and Google AI Pro for Education.
- Later: Google says it comes to Starter and Education editions in the coming months.
- Region and language: US users with English (US) as their language, for now.
- Admins: there is no admin control for this feature.
Google lists no separate price. It comes with the paid Workspace editions above.
What it means for an office team
The basic use is the Monday morning check. Before you open a single thread, AI Inbox lists the things people asked you for and when, such as the signed engagement letter a client needs by Thursday (made up), and summarizes the thread you missed while you were out.
Treat the list as a starting point, not the record. Open the email behind any to-do before you promise a date back, and add anything it missed that was agreed on a call rather than in writing.
