Why this matters
You are about to rewrite your website and want to start with the pages that matter. Which ones do people actually read, and which ones lead to someone sending your contact form? Guessing means rewriting the wrong pages first.
In this module you open Pages and screens in GA4 to find the most viewed pages, switch the Event count column to form_submit to see which pages bring enquiries, and read the Events report over 90 days to spot forms people start but never send.
What you’ll build
A list of your most viewed pages, with how many form submissions came from each.
The Events report over the last 90 days, with form_start and form_submit side by side.
What you need
- Nothing to start the practiceThe practice is built from real GA4 screens with every number blurred and does not touch any account.
- Access to a GA4 property, to do it for realThe Viewer role is enough. form_start and form_submit are sent automatically when Enhanced measurement is on.
Concepts
2 ideas you’ll use in the practice.
Pages and screens
One row per page path (the part of the address after your domain; / is the home page) with Views, Active users, Views per active user, Average engagement time and Event count.
Event count adds up every event on the page until you pick one: All events > form_submit shows forms sent from each page.
Events and key events
Every action is an event. GA4 sends page_view, session_start, first_visit, user_engagement and scroll on its own, plus click, file_download, form_start and form_submit with Enhanced measurement.
A key event (formerly a conversion) is an event an admin has marked as important, under Admin > Data display > Events. This module only reads reports and changes no settings.
Practice
Do every step yourself in a practice copy of the real tool. It checks your work, and “Do it for me” finishes any step you get stuck on.
Do it for real
Now repeat it in your own account. Tick each step as you go.
Quick check
3 questions to check you’ve got it.
1. How do you see form submissions per page?
- Pages and screens > Event count > All events > form_submit
- Admin > Events > Create
- Traffic acquisition > Sessions
Show the answer
Pages and screens > Event count > All events > form_submit. Picking an event in the Event count column filters that column to it.
2. Many form_start events and few form_submit events suggest…
- People give up on the form
- The form works perfectly
- GA4 is broken
Show the answer
People give up on the form. Starts without submits are abandoned forms; shorten or simplify the form.
3. What is a key event?
- An event marked as important, such as a form submission
- Any page view
- A paid ad click only
Show the answer
An event marked as important, such as a form submission. Key events are the actions that matter to the business, marked by an admin.
