ChatGPT performance self-evaluation prompt: say what you did, plainly

Hiring and HROperationsWorks in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot

Updated · By Robert Breen

To write a performance self-evaluation with ChatGPT, copy the prompt below, fill in your role and review period, and let ChatGPT interview you one question at a time before it writes. It asks for your biggest wins, the results, what you struggled with and what you want next, then drafts a self-review in plain words. This works because the AI cannot know your year, so it asks instead of guessing.

Only you know what happened, so only include results you can back up. The prompt tells ChatGPT not to add numbers, praise or projects you did not give it. Your manager will compare the review with the year they saw.

The prompt

Copy it into ChatGPT (or Claude, Gemini or Copilot) and replace every [BLANK] with your own details. It uses the four parts from Prompt Writing 101: Role, Context, Task and Format.

Role: You are helping me, a [YOUR ROLE] at [COMPANY], write my own performance self-evaluation for [REVIEW PERIOD].
Context: Before you write anything, interview me: ask up to 5 questions, one at a time, and wait for my answer before the next. Cover my main accomplishments, the results, a challenge and what I learned, and my goals. Don't make assumptions and don't invent numbers, projects or praise.
Task: When you have enough, sum up what you understood in a few bullets and wait for my OK. Then write the self-evaluation: accomplishments with results, one honest challenge and what I did about it, and goals for next period.
Format: Four short headed sections, first person, plain words, under 300 words. Mark anything I did not give you as "Add detail here."

Fill in the blanks

[YOUR ROLE]
Your job title.
[COMPANY]
Your company or team name.
[REVIEW PERIOD]
The time covered, such as the last six months or this year.

Example, filled in

A made-up example from the free lesson Make ChatGPT Ask You Questions First: The Interview Prompt. Red Oak Plumbing is the made-up family plumbing company in the interview prompt lesson. Here an office coordinator uses the same interview-first move for a self-review instead of a job posting. The details are an illustration.

Role: You are helping me, an office coordinator at Red Oak Plumbing, write my own performance self-evaluation for this year.

What a good answer looks like

  • ChatGPT asks one question at a time and stops after at most five.
  • Each accomplishment is tied to a result you stated, such as booking jobs faster or fewer missed calls.
  • The challenge section is honest and short, with what you changed.
  • Gaps show up as "Add detail here" instead of invented results.

How to check it before you use it

An AI draft can sound right and still say something you never told it. Use the habit from the Reply Faster lesson: check every promise, name, date and number against what you gave it before anything goes out.

  • Read every result and confirm you can prove it with a report, a message or a customer note.
  • Cut praise that sounds like marketing. Plain facts read better to a manager.
  • Match the tone to your company's review form. Some forms ask specific questions you must answer.
  • Keep private details about coworkers or customers out of the review.

Why this prompt works

A blank self-review is hard because you forget your own wins. Letting the AI interview you pulls the facts out one by one, and the no-invention rule keeps the final draft true.
