Before-and-after job post prompt: free ChatGPT template
Updated · By Robert Breen
Use this when you've got a good before photo and a good after photo and want to post them on Facebook, Instagram or your Google Business Profile. Before-and-after posts show your work better than any slogan. The AI can't see your photos, so it needs your notes, and left alone it will add drama ("a disaster waiting to happen") or claims you can't back up ("saved them thousands"). Get the customer's OK before posting photos of their home, and keep the address and anything personal out of the frame and the caption.
The prompt
Copy it into ChatGPT (or Claude, Gemini or Copilot) and replace every [BLANK] with your own details. It uses the four parts from Prompt Writing 101: Role, Context, Task and Format.
Role: You write social posts for [BUSINESS] in a plain, proud-of-the-work voice. Context: Before: [BEFORE]. What we did: [WORK DONE]. After: [AFTER]. Where it will be posted: [PLATFORM]. The customer agreed to the photos being shared. Don't mention the street, the customer's name or anything that identifies the home. Don't add scare words, savings, or results we didn't state. Task: Write a caption that tells the before, the work and the after in three short beats, then one line inviting people to get in touch. Format: Under 80 words, or under 50 for a Google Business Profile post. No more than three hashtags, and no emoji. Give me two versions so I can pick.
Fill in the blanks
[BUSINESS]- Your company name, trade and town or service area.
[BEFORE]- What the before photo shows and what the problem was, in your tech's words.
[WORK DONE]- What you did, in a sentence or two, with any part or model names you're happy to share.
[AFTER]- What the after photo shows and what changed for the customer, only what's true.
[PLATFORM]- Facebook, Instagram or Google Business Profile.
Example, filled in
A made-up example from the free lesson Build an AI Customer Follow-Up Agent for Plumbers. Blue Maple Plumbing is the made-up plumbing company in the AI Customer Follow-Up Agent lesson, where Linda gets a water heater replacement. The photos and details are made up for this example, and Linda said yes to sharing them.
Role: You write social posts for Blue Maple Plumbing in a plain, proud-of-the-work voice. Context: Before: a 14-year-old gas water heater with rust streaks down the side and a puddle underneath, in a cramped utility closet. What we did: replaced it with a new 50-gallon gas tank, added a drain pan and a new shutoff valve, and hauled the old one away. After: a clean closet, a dry floor, and a family of four with hot water again the same day. Where it will be posted: Facebook.
What a good answer looks like
- Three short beats: rusty, leaking 14-year-old tank; new 50-gallon tank, drain pan and shutoff valve; dry floor and hot water the same day.
- No customer name, no street, no town smaller than your service area.
- A low-key close like "Water heater looking tired? Send us a message."
- Two versions that differ in opening line, not in facts.
How to check it before you use it
An AI draft can sound right and still say something you never told it. Use the habit from the Reply Faster lesson: check every promise, name, date and number against what you gave it before anything goes out.
- Check every promise and claim. "Lower energy bills" and "lasts 20 years" aren't in your notes, so they come out.
- Look at the photos again for house numbers, family photos or mail in the frame before posting.
- Make sure the permission is real and recent; a quick text from the customer saying yes is worth keeping.
- Delete scare words like "ticking time bomb." A rusty tank speaks for itself.
Why this prompt works
The before, work, after structure gives the AI a shape to fill with your facts instead of marketing filler. The privacy line in the Context is there because a caption is permanent and public; it's the same PII caution you'd use with any customer detail.
Practice it in the free lesson
Prompt Writing 101: Role, Context, Task, Format: Ask ChatGPT for the same customer email twice, once vaguely and once with a four-part prompt, and see exactly why structure gets a better answer. You do every step yourself in a practice copy of ChatGPT, and nothing touches your real accounts.
