What is a mixture of experts model?
Quick answer
A mixture of experts (MoE) model is a large language model divided into many smaller sub-networks, called experts, plus a router that picks a few of them for each piece of text. Only part of the model runs at a time, so it can hold a lot of knowledge while staying faster and cheaper to run.

Why it matters for a small business
MoE is one reason some recent models are both large and affordable. Mistral AI's Mixtral and DeepSeek-V3 are openly described as mixture of experts models; DeepSeek says V3 has 671 billion parameters in total but uses about 37 billion for each token. Many companies don't say whether their closed models use it.
You don't choose MoE as a setting. It matters when you read model news or vendor claims: a big total parameter count on an MoE model doesn't mean every answer uses all of it, and speed and price are what you will actually notice.

In Add an AI Chatbot to Your Website with Lovable AI, Lovable picks a default chat model for the Hazelbrook Hair Studio assistant, currently a fast Gemini Flash model, and you can ask for other supported models by name, including OpenAI and Claude models.
The lesson never asks how those models are built inside, and you don't need to know. What it has you check is what you'd notice from any design choice: under More, then AI, each test question shows the model used, its tokens, the credits it cost and how long it took.

Common confusions
Mixture of experts vs multi-agent system
MoE experts are hidden parts inside one model, chosen for each token. A multi-agent system is several separate AI agents, each with its own job and instructions.
Mixture of experts vs model router
A model router picks a whole model for each request. MoE routing happens inside one model, many times per answer.
Tips
- Judge a model by speed, price and results on your task, not by its parameter total.
- Check a provider's usage page to see the real cost per request.

Frequently asked questions
- Is a mixture of experts model better?
- Not automatically. It is a way to make a large model cheaper and faster to run; quality still depends on the training.
- Which models use mixture of experts?
- Mixtral from Mistral AI and DeepSeek-V3 are publicly described that way. Many closed models don't say.
- Does mixture of experts make answers faster?
- It can, because only part of the model runs for each token. Real speed also depends on the hardware and the service.
