What is SEO in digital marketing?
Quick answer
SEO, short for search engine optimization, is the work of making a website easier for search engines like Google to understand and more useful for searchers, so its pages appear higher in the unpaid (organic) results for the searches its customers make.

Why it matters
Search is where people go when they already have a problem: "payroll software for restaurants", "how to file a 1099". Ranking for those searches puts a business in front of buyers at the exact moment they are looking, without paying for each click.
SEO is slow but compounding. A page that ranks well can bring visitors for years, while paid ads stop the day the budget does. That is why most businesses pair the two: ads for quick results, SEO for steady, cheaper organic traffic over time.
A worked example
An HR consultancy writes a detailed guide called "How to write an employee handbook", with a free template. Before publishing, it checks with keyword research that the phrase gets about 2,400 searches a month in the US. Six months later the page ranks fourth and brings about 310 visits a month.
About 3% of those visitors download the template in exchange for an email address, giving 9 new leads a month. Getting the same 310 visits from search ads at a $3.20 cost per click would cost about $990 a month, so the page pays back the day of writing it within a few months.
Often confused with
SEO vs PPC
SEO earns unpaid rankings over months. PPC buys a place in the sponsored results immediately and charges for each click. Both target the same searches.
SEO vs SEM
SEM (search engine marketing) sometimes means all search marketing, paid and unpaid, and sometimes just paid search ads. Check which one someone means.
On-page vs technical vs off-page SEO
On-page is the content and headings. Technical is speed, mobile layout and whether Google can crawl the pages. Off-page is mainly links from other websites.
Tips
- Write one page per search intent, and answer the question in the first paragraph.
- Check Google Search Console monthly for pages ranking in positions 8 to 20; they are the easiest wins.
- Update pages that are slipping before writing new ones.

- Should a small business start with SEO or PPC?: PPC first if you need customers this month; start SEO now if you can wait 3 to 6 months. Most small businesses end up doing both. A plan…

Frequently asked questions
- How long does SEO take to work?
- New pages on an established site often start ranking within weeks and settle within 3 to 6 months. A brand-new site usually takes longer.
- Can I do SEO myself?
- Yes. Clear pages that answer real questions, a fast mobile-friendly site and a free Google Search Console account cover most of what a small business needs.
- Does AI-written content hurt SEO?
- Google judges how helpful the content is, not who or what wrote it. Thin pages produced in bulk do poorly whichever way they are made.
