What are impressions in digital marketing?
Quick answer
An impression is counted each time an ad, social post or search result is shown on someone’s screen, whether or not they notice or click it. If one person sees the same ad three times, that is three impressions.

Why it matters
Impressions are the starting number for almost every other marketing metric. Click-through rate divides clicks by impressions, and many ads are priced per thousand impressions (CPM). If impressions are wrong or tiny, every rate built on them is shaky.
In search, impressions also show demand. Google Search Console tells you how many times your pages appeared for each query, which reveals searches you rank for, even ones that do not get clicks yet.
A worked example
A local accounting firm’s guide to "estimated quarterly taxes" shows 18,400 impressions in Google Search Console over 28 days, with 220 clicks (1.2% CTR) at an average position of 9.4. The page is on the edge of the first page, so many people see it but few click.
The firm rewrites the title to "Estimated Quarterly Taxes: 2026 Due Dates and a Free Calculator" and adds the dates to the first paragraph. Four weeks later the page shows 21,000 impressions at position 6.1 and 690 clicks, a 3.3% CTR. Impressions rose a little; clicks tripled.
Often confused with
Impressions vs reach
Reach counts unique people who saw something. Impressions count every showing. 10,000 impressions with a reach of 2,500 means each person saw it four times on average (frequency 4).
Impressions vs views
For video, a "view" usually needs a few seconds of watching. An impression only needs the video to appear on screen.
Served vs viewable impressions
A served impression may load below the fold where nobody scrolls. A viewable impression, by the common industry standard, means at least half the ad was on screen for at least one second.
Tips
- Watch impressions together with CTR, never alone.
- For awareness campaigns, check frequency so the same people are not seeing the ad ten times.
- In Search Console, pages with many impressions and low CTR are the quickest wins.

Frequently asked questions
- What is CPM?
- Cost per mille: what you pay for 1,000 impressions. $15 CPM and 200,000 impressions cost $3,000.
- Are impressions the same as views?
- Not quite. An impression means the item was displayed. A view usually needs some minimum attention, such as 2 or 3 seconds of a video.
- Why do I have impressions but no clicks?
- Often low position (people see you but pick a higher result), a title that does not match the search, or an ad aimed at the wrong audience.
